Is it possible to put a transmission and engine into 1991 3.0 together?

I'm putting a new engine in my 1991 3.0. It would be nice to put the engine and trans together outside the vehicle and then put them in as one unit, but it looked like that might not be possible. Seems like that first cross member (riveted to frame) would get in the way? Anyway, just double checking before I go ahead and install them separately. thanks!

I have a 89 Bronco II. Very similar to your 91 Ranger. I was successful in removing engine and manual trans as one piece but it was with great difficulty. I had to stand them almost straight up to get them out. Never again. I recommend installing them separate. Good luck.

I have pulled many transmissions in these trucks, pulled many engines, and once pulled them out together as a unit.

If you just need to replace the engine and the transmission is fine I would get a tranny jack of some sort, unbolt the transmission and slide it back as far as you can, then lift the engine out, set the new one in, and mate them up again in the truck.

After doing it every which way possible I will only ever pull the engine and trans as a single unit if they both have to come out for something. And even then I question if it is worth doing that way.

You need at least 3 people to put in or pull out engine/trans combo
You can, of course, do it alone, just very hard move it around while lowering or raising
Even with 2 people its hard
You need someone on the lift, on the firewall and under the vehicle
And you need a away to change the angle when lifting or lowering, alot, and hold the angle as its changed

Lowering just the engine in or raising it can be done alone
And removing or installing trans can be done alone

I have removed/replaced both together and by myself. Keeping the engine and tranny together wasn't so bad but doing it alone is painfully slow. Get help if you can.

I installed the 5.0/4R70W in my '99 as a unit, but there's a permanent ripple on my core support where I didn't get the angle right (and I'm not sure doing so was possible) while dropping things in. Easier to do separately.

if you haven't done it yet,,,

get a couple of bolts that match the bell housing bolts and cut the heads off, install in the block on each side to guide the tranny home.
be sure the bolts are long enough to grab for removal.
I ground small flats on them for a wrench.

^ I think I saw this advice somewhere else just recently too. great idea. I cut slots in the ends w/ angle grinder so I could use screw driver to remove if they got stuck. wish I'd done this in the past.
