ok so i pulled the half @%^ duraspark system and am puttin in the factory wiring harness from an 83 i picked up at the junk yard with a comp for 32 $. :icon_cheers:now i'm tryin to figure out where do i plug the ignition coil wires into? i looked up the wiring diagram and i no it goes something called the solid state??? what the heck is this. If the previous person did put the different distributer on the truck will it still work?? i'm a little bit lost. Thanks guys

I just pulled the computer out of my 83 2.8 and did the duraspark and feel the only reason to keep the computer is if you have to for emissions. If you cant figure out the duraspark you probably wont get the computer working right. You need all the sensors, relays, solenoids, carburetor, EGR, vacuum lines all working right for it to work and everything is spendy new if you can find it. I recommend fixing the duraspark if you don`t need the computer. The duraspark has 6 wires and the computer has wow probably 150 that you need to troubleshoot take the loss on the money you spent and You can put a whole new duraspark for about $120 and we can walk you thru it but you problem is probably pretty simple dont waste you money on the computer. What is wrong with your ignition (duraspark).

Oh by the way are you talking the 6 wire connector at the dizzy you will need the stock dizzy also I just noticed your in CO sorry for ur bad luck you have to have either the stock emissions or you can put the TBI system to pass emissions you have to have the air pump working and they both use the TFI ignition but the TBI needs two fuel lines supply and return. If your going stock plan on alot of trips to the bone yard or maybe find a donor vehicle get a manual and a volt/ohm meter you will have alot of testing to do and the tech library has alot of info also so do your homework get all the parts together a good repar manual check the bone yard. Does your carb have the feedback solenoid on it if not you will need a carb also. I hope you have alot of patience and time you will need it.

actually i'm in pueblo so emmisions aren't a worry for me....i dont even have the cat under my jeep and its loud as hell...so no worries on all that stuff...can u give me a list of the stuff i would need? i will check the tech library for all of the stuff i will need and how to wire it in. The carb that is on there now has no electrical connecters.... the distrib cab is a clip on style flat head not a screw on or anything... what all do i need from what i've told you..o i also have the little grey box thing it has a total of six wires going into it. Is this the right thing? sorry i know this is a lot of questions. I also have the electric carb in my possesion.

the grey duraspark box has six wires coming out of it but the one off of the rotor is a three plug how do i wire these in (i do not have the connectors as they were junk and got cut off) also where do my red and white go to? i know they go to the ignition coil but in which order? (my coil has two green out of one spot and one red out of the other) thank you! you are being of great help!

Thats probably the duraspark box.

There is a LOT of stuff you're probably gonna have to get in order to get that EECIV computer system working. On the passenger side fender there is a plastic shield (sometimes) that covers the starter solenoid, and about 4 or 5 vacuum solenoids. You need all of those, and all of the associated hoses for them. You'll need to switch the carburetor for an emission controlled feedback carb. The distributor will need to be switched for a TFI distributor. Might need the TFI ignition coil as well. The EGR valve might be gone, you'll need one of those if it is. It should be directly in front of the carb on top of the intake manifold. If you see a metal plate with two bolts then it's gone.
The coolant temp sensor, the O2 sensor, all the piping for the AIR system if that has been removed.

You're probably better off getting rid of the truck and buying one with all the stuff in it if you need to pass emissions. If not, keep the duraspark system. It's a lot easier and cheaper to figure out whats wrong with a duraspark system than it is to piece together a TFI and EECIV system.

ya i'm gonna stick with the duraspark system..i'm trying to figure out all of the wires as of now and exactly where they go. All of the connectors are gone so im just trying to find which wire is which. most of the write up in the tech library makes sense but part of it does not. this is where i'm getting a little lost... sorry i'm pretty inexperienced with all this stuff but i wanted to learn..so here i am trying to figure it out at 17

thank you so much you have been a HUGE help hopefully this truck will be running tomoro

Yea just get the duraspark working the wires on the distributor and the wires on the duraspark module need to be color coded if you have the connector for the distributor I believe orange, purple, black hopefully the connector on the distributor is there but you can either use crimp connectors or solder the wires on the module just make sure the orange and purple are right the black is the ground. a volt/ohm meter is helpful. the green wire from the module goes to the green wire on the coil. make sure the module has a good ground also either to the chassis or the engine just screw it to something metal and sand the spot where it mounts next is the power you need to wires from the ignition the white wire on the module goes to the start circuit or the red wire from the ignition and the red wire from the module goes to the white wire from the ignition. It is kind of confusing but it is right. if you still have the oval 2 wire connector from the ignition switch on the truck with a red and white wire just reverse the colors on the module. once you know the wires are right check for spark your ready to time it. Does the carb you have on it work it sounds like you have the right carb on it also so get it running and timed correct then we can tackle the carb. here is the link for the duraspark conversion if you have a round coil I recommend using the stock coil the square coil if you use a round coil you will have to put a resistor for the power to it or you will burn up coils.

ok sweet i have to just do the red and white wires and i should be done with the module. in the tech library it says things about the bright green wires and the red with blue stripe and such should i ignore that or where abouts do they connect

Just by your post I kinna figured you were young but yea as long as the parts are good you can have it running tomorrow well almost today here. Go through and look at all the vacuum ports also. make sure the carb is bolted snug the only vacuum lines you need are the power valve on the bottom front of carb if there is a nipple out the center you need a tube from it to the nipple on the spacer right below it. underneath the front on the base is another nipple next to the drivers idle screw that goes to the distributor on the back of the carb base is a big nipple that goes to the PCV valve in the passenger valve cover. The power brake booster has a large vacuum line from it to the manifold vacuum tree. everything else gets plugged unless it has the pulloff for the choke. there is also a nipple on the back of the lower spacer that needs to be plugged that is hard to see but it might be connected to the vapor cannister next to the radiator drivers side just leave it connected. I dont have to work tomorrow so you can call me with Qs 206-909-3308 hopefully we can get you out on the trail but it is good to know your engine when you get on the trail so take your time now so you wont have trouble out there.

I believe you just have the red and white I think you looking at the later model ranger

ya i have the square coil. when i got the truck none of this was wired this way..that explains a lot of it. it also had the round coil but i replaced it with a new square one and a new connector. I also got the mount out of a junkyard for it.
