My truck won't start unless I put it in park just right. To make sure it will start the next time, I have to move the shifter in a certain way along with pressing and releasing the brakes with proper timing. Otherwise, the electronics light up but the engine doesn't make a peep. Parked properly, it fires up without issue.

It will go for days with no problems. Then I'll park it somewhere it doesn't like and it won't start. I can turn the key two clicks, move the shifter out of park, then back to park to get it lined up right. Usually only takes one or two tries to get it running. Sometimes, depending on how I'm parked, it takes a lot more. When it's really stubborn, I have to put it in neutral, push it a few feet, then back to park and it'll run.

It has 71k miles. I got it at 55k a few years ago. The problem started last summer. It's been happening more frequently as time goes on.

It has a new battery. I've also replaced the ignition switch. I believe everything else is stock.

I would greatly appreciate an insight on this problem. Thanks.

So… I’ll move this to a more appropriate section…

Also, I have found that when the bolts come loose for the automatic shifter it can cause this problem. It is possible to reach them by feel from under the dash but if you pull the dash apart it’s easier to get to them. Two Torx head bolts. I pull them and put some blue Locktite on them so they don’t come loose again.

Towards the end I talk about the bolts
