just bought a 1990 Ranger with a V-8 in it. po started to 'fix' it. essentially, it's a basket case. how do i identify the motor? craigs list ad said 302.intake says edelbrock performance 289. parts motor has fomoco numbers on intake
how do i ID the automatic trannie?
after it's running, then the custom work starts
dav in tampa

The 289 and 302 are essentially the same engine. As far as I know they use the same intake.

They do use the same intake. Rotating assy is obviously different and the 302 has longer bores.

Remove the starter and there is casting on the block numbers there which will give you a vague idea to the original application for the engine, what is inside is anyone's guess though.

True, but a 289 can be built using a 302 block, and nice versa, the 302 bores were longer to help with pistons stability/slap at the bottom of the stroke, but didn't change the block height.

metric?

is there anything metric on the 289-302 motor? or did fomoco change from sae to metric at any time, just relating to this series motor?
i am still at the info gathering stage on this project. the po twice removed, built it and had it running. i took too long to get back to him with an offer and the guy i bought from snagged it. he is a car salesman and should have stayed with what he knows. although i have been throwing wrenches around for more years than i'll reveal, i'm not sure i can save this truck
right now, the only part i KNOW i'm missing is the bolt to hold the balancer onto the crank. oh, also no timing marks
can someone tell me the socket size for the crank bolt? the 'u-pick' is going to make money off me!
when i get to doing the wiring, buy stock in Coors!

The block was SAE until the mid 80s then it switched to metric. Not sure about the crank bolt, the big one in the middle is probably 19mm/3/4" the little ones that hold the weight on are probably 9/16.

My '87 is pretty much standard. Don't remember what the crank bolt is though.

how to ID the transmission part. Look online at Oreilly's or somewhere that sells pan gasket kits, and observe what gaskets look like and lay under truck and observe pan shape to determine what you have. More than likely it's a C-4 automatic, but Ford did make some small block bellhousing pattern C-6s.

thought i would find number on balancer to check against mustang parts site
D8TE-6316-EA SD does not show up but several 6316's do, all for 289/302 motors.

progress

well, i did the lie- under-it trans ID and it's a C-6.
a ford parts site matches the balancer number (D8TE-6316-EA) to a '78 F100/150.
