I saw something a couple of years ago and now...

a couple of years back I was SHOWN something I thought was neat...

IT was a PCMCIA card "adapter" that contained a small hard drive
I believe it was an actual spinning hard drive similar in size to a
CompactFlash memory card.

But I can't find anything like it...

I was also told there was a PCMCIA actual spinning hard drive
(similar to the hard drive in an ipod Classic) as the PCMCIA slot in older notebook computers is of dubious utility (on well featured notebooks anyway)
I think occupying that slot with a second HDD would be "neat"

But then again simply having 64GB of mp3's stored THERE instead of on the laptop HDD would be "neat"

Then again my laptop also has a CF slot, so...

any thoughts?

i've seen the same thing, it was in a skymall magazine on a delta flight, maybe see if you can find a website or something?

uh, why? they make USB drives with insanely large storage capacities these days. they may be expensive when they first come out, but give it a year and they can be had for $20.
i just saw a 16GB scandisk for $25 at office max, the first computer i bought myself in 2002 had 40GB total.

even when i was in school and creating huge Adobe Illustrator files, i never had more than 2GB on my USB drive.

I have a 32G USB key that is smaller than my thumbnail, and half the thickness of the USB slot. Cost me $37.
Why would you want a small capacity mechanical drive that is prone to failure?

the point was that it's easier to make one bootable...

AND it doesn't tie up one of the USB ports.

a CF card "Disappears" into the laptop, as does the right kind of PCMCIA card
The PCMCIA slot is otherwise useless to me as my laptop has wireless built-in, plus two USB's and a firewire port, as well as a seven way card reader on the other side.

It's a gateway M350WVN, one of the first "desktop replacement"
notebooks.the flower of 2004 technology:)

IF I can make a 16GB
CF card bootable I'd lose interest in the idea

IF I could get a 64GB CF card for less than a small fortune I'd
store my media on that (basically it'd be read only useage) and that would free up HDD space.

Then again if the bios flash I'm about to to to my laptop lets my computer recognize my 320gb HDD as more than the 128gb it shows now it becomes far less relevant.

(I currently have >100gb of free space, but I should have ~300gb.)

yeah, it would be cool...considering, i have 40gb in music, then all the movies....i need a way to free up some space lol.

Well, atleast I have the desktop up and running

FINALLY running XP...

Perversely after all my efforts someone was giving away a "dead" computer (On Freecycle)... all it REALLY needed was a power supply...
and the XP that was on it passed authentication.

Ofcourse I had to delete virtually all the applications on it... They were all installed in French and I couldn't change them:(

It seems this computer was formerly the property of the French foreign Service
(UN Councilate) and while their IT people had installed all the apps on the HDD they never registered any of them because the Power supply died in the process and they junked it.

But I got the OS cloned off the Drive it came with (an 80GB Hitachi) before
it started making a death rattle (the infamous "Clicks of doom"...)

This thing SEEMS lightning fast compared to my old P4,
but it's only a 2.8GHz/1024 Vs the 2.4GHz/512 I just dismantled...

Now to get my E-mail back up and my "favorites" copied over....

Good to hear you finally got one!

2.8Ghz/1GB Ram should be a decent computer on Win XP, especially with a new hardrive. But, I wouldn't expect it to run Battlefield Bad Company 2, but, I never saw you as much of a Gamer.

On the hardrive dilema, I would just go with an external USB drive, that way you could use it on both desktop and laptop machine. :icon_thumby:

i would go with an external firewire drive...that port wont be doing anything else

No the 1Gb is the Cache size of the chip which affects chip speed.
it's the number on the chip that many (wrongly) ignore)

I actually have 2.56Gb of RAM, I'd have more but there's a bad contact
in one of the four memory slots.

From cold, power off, I have an idling (stable) desktop in 22 seconds:)

And I'm not gamer, hell I don't even have a working joystick
(though if someone has a dual throttle USB stick they aren't
using there is this flight sim I like...)

Other than posting here and browsing ebay, amazon, etc my computer
is mainly used to play with audio files.

But now I can play with video...

I have carried one of those in my notebook bag for maybe 10 years. Before memory was so cheap it was a good way to transfer files. I'll get some pictures and more detail on it tomorrow.

Mine is a 1GB drive - that was as large as possible at the time I got it. IBM brand, as you can see in one of the pics, mfg in Taiwan by IBM Storage. It is a mechanical spinning hard drive. In a couple of the pics you can sorta see the very tiny Phillips screws at the corners that hold the case together. I fired it up and seems to still work just fine. A screen shot of the drive properties is included in the pics.
Alan - if you would like to have it, I'm sure we can work something out. I have no sentimental attachment to it.
