My credo
What's the worst that could happen?
I have an 94 Ranger Splash SC 4.0L. The left side head has a hole worn through the casting near the rear where the exhaust manifold bolts in. I think and was told it was from a coolant leak and that over time it ate the metal away. The exhaust manifold does look deformed. Even the head bolts look as though I'm not going to have an easy time removing a couple of them.

Has anyone heard of this happening and can I just replace the bad head. The other side looks totally normal.

Thanks in advance.
R

Might not be easy to find just one head, even some junkyards will make you buy both.

Can you do it though, yes. Just kinda a waste since you're going to be tearing it down to the point where doing both heads is barely any extra work than doing one. I'd at least do both of the headgaskets and clean up/decarbon the other head.

Yup. I know and will. More than likely I'm gonna end up yanking it and cleaning the whole engine compartment too. And who knows what else I'll end up changing out. I will buy remans. not sure what brand yet though.

No, haven't heard of that location being an issue on the 4.0l OHV heads

The aluminum intake would get eaten away by old coolant at the cross over points, and leak, right front and left rear, of intake

Yes, you remove both heads and either fix current head or replace it, usually its not much more for 2 heads

If engine/vehicle is running I would take it to an exhaust shop and tell them you will be pulling the heads
They will pull the manifold bolts and replace any that are bad, and also pull the header pipe bolts and replace any that are bad
And just snug them up, not torque them down with loc-tite, lol
Most I ever paid was $80
But not having to deal stuck exhaust bolts is "priceless" :)

Damn good idea. Thanks.

Why does god need a gun?

Sorry, the correct answer is he doesn't, its just an alien pretending to be god to escape from space prison...

Ok...you guys are messed up --- I like it.

We're all insane, but I do believe the virus is making us a little extra weird...

Dude. We drive Rangers. And make them into stuff that's pretty much anything you can dream up.

Oh yeah. We're strange AF at times.
