So Ive had this knocking for a while that's actually decently loud, someone told me in might be a piston rod, I disregarded that due to the noise disappearing under any load on the engine, and that's it's been going on for a long time, my thoughts were a bad lifter, and during my trip to a pick and pull junkyard I pulled some lifters off a 3.0 windstar, they look salvageable but not sure, I pulled the retaining clip and drained the old nasty oil from inside and ran them through my ultrasonic cleaner, before I did 2 of them were able to be pressed in slightly by hand, the rest couldn't, I drained the oil and it seems like they can't be pushed in anymore however it may be that it's in all the way already because of no oil being in them, what is the normal for when they are filled, some give or no give? How can I tell if they're ok? I don't have the budget to replace them all, figured I could get a good set out of 2 sets, any help or tutorials welcome, pictures available if needed

To replace the lifters on a 4.0 you have to pull the heads, I don't know bout yours. If you do then saving a few bucks on new lifters isn't going to help you much. Ford has an issue with properly oiling the lifters which causes the tick. Your engine will be fine, most guys here have a tick without problems.

It's a 3.0 and I had to replace head gasket and water pump so it's already pulled apart, and it's pretty loud it's not just a tick, I need info to know which of these lifters are good and bad so I know which to put back in

Your going to tear it down the same, regardless if you replace 1 or all, so I would replace them all while your in there.
