I have a 2001 Ford Ranger Edge 4X4. I have searched for a solution, but nothing is quite like what im experiencing. When i accelerate to, or while at highway speeds there is a high pitched whining noise coming from the front of my truck. With cruise control on the whining is much lower, but still there. Any help or suggestions on what it could be is much appreciated.

I wish thats all that was wrong, that would be an easy fix :icon_twisted:

Could be a wheel bearing, does it get worse when you turn one way or another?

Might also be a vac leak.

Is your wife in the truck with you:-D

You beat me to it.......
:icon_rofl:

Is there any vibration or the like associated with the noise? Had a wheel bearing go out before, and could feel it in the steering wheel.

It doesn't seem to get any worse when i turn, and i dont feel any vibration, but il go out and jack it up and check to see if there's any play

Noise doesn't always mean play. In fact I find that more often than not I replace them for one or the other, but rarely both.

Thanks for the help, il try replacing them and see if that helps. Its probably past due for them to be changed anyway with over 140k on them

If you have cracks in your front ring and pinion or low fluid that could do it. Wheel bearing are more ofa humming rubbing sound. Or its an pulley or alt goin out.

Yeah, 75,000 miles is about the average life span. You might want to figure out exactly which one is noisy before throwing them both on though. Wait until you see the price.

the other thing could be the windshield. I know it sounds crazy but if the seal comes loose at the top of the windshield, it will make a whistle sound and be absolutely annoying. i have this with my 97 250 and it only does it at speeds above 60

my girlfreinds jeep did that...it turned out being the front diff needed a rebuild....bad bearings

Do you have an aftermarket intake such as the K&N? Mine makes a high pitched whine under certain conditions.
