I just bought and old 98 XLT. It won't stay running without starting fluid. I think it's needs rings, but shouldn't it run and blows blue smoke from the engine and not the exhaust pipe!! Any help would be appreciated! Fuel pump maybe?

Welcome to TRS~!

Most likely fuel related if it runs with starter fluid. You can start by testing the fuel pressure and whether the pump is working.

When you first turn the key on you should hear the pump kick on for at least two seconds...if not, then it may be the pump or a wire issue...or there is also the Intertia switch that shuts the pump down in the event of an accident. The Inertia switch is behind the passenger side kick panel (by the door)...there is a reset button that you can press to see if that was the problem.

You can also bypass the Inertia switch with a U shaped wire by disconnecting the wire clip and jumping those wires. It would not be the first time one has gone bad.

If the pump is coming on but the fuel is not getting to the injectors it may be a clogged fuel filter...change if not sure...

There is also a Fuel Pressure Regulator on the fuel line that can be damaged (diaphragm) that will not allow the fuel pressure to build and also allows fuel directly into the engine via vacuum lines...remove the vacuum line and sniff it...if you smell gas fumes or see liquid gas come out...your FPR needs to be replaced.

The fuel pump is easy to replace...by lifting the bed up...much easier than dropping the tank...or you can check the wires to make sure there is power going to the pump...but keep in mind the pump does not get power all the time...but hooking it up to a direct battery connection will allow you to test it...just stick it in a bucket with some gas and see if it pumps...make sure to catch the gas in another container...

Stay safe...it's not that dangerous but does require some caution...:)

Oh, and if you need more help just post it below in the appropriate section so more people can see your question...this is the introduction section and not usually where all the big brains hang out...
