Help. 97 v8 swap in 2001 edge 4x4.

What's going on guys. I have a 2001 ranger edge 4x4 that had the 4.0 I got a donor explorer 1997 5.0l that I took the running motor and trans and dropped it in my ranger. I used the return line for the fuel on my stock fuel line and used a one way filter I also got the the engine completely swapped over minus a few things I need input on. What did you use for starter signal to solinode? I kept my 2001 stock body wore harness and used the 97 engine harness everything has matched except the pig take fro the ac and alternator but the stock body harness I think I have figured out what goes to what and obviously the ac pressure switch . But as of now I have just turned the key to run and jump the starter to turn it over bit get nothing but and pop like it wants to start. I check the fuel lines and have fuel pressure . I'm not a shade tree mechanic but am certified mechanic so my knowledge is good and can trouble shoot well but this build has taken me longer due to working two jobs and racing racing jet skis. But I'm tired of riding a bicycle for work lol. So any help and insight to make this build move along would be great. Ranger been dwn since July 4th. But I'm at the home stretch now. Thank you.

There are a couple places things might be mis-behaving:

On the '01, Ranger the ground for the starter solenoid relay goes through the 01 PCM as part of the PATS system, the '97 Expo PCM does not support that so you'll need to provide an alternate ground for the relay. (pin 28 on the Ranger side)

Additionally, you'll need to add a ground to the PCM at pin 13 on the Expo/5.0 side of the 42 pin connector.

Where the wiring really gets tricky is with the A/C system: The '97 Expo and 01 Ranger use completely different control logic for the a/c clutch.

On the 01, there is continuous power to the clutch relay and the PCM has 100% control of the relay. The switch on the dash simply tells the PCM you've got A/C selected.

On the '97, the PCM is simply an on/off switch in series with the high and low pressure switches. The dash switch goes to both the PCM and the relay.

Ok did the ground for the pcm and the starter solinode nothing. I have to use a power probe to jump start the engine but doesn't start

But I also wondered. My 2001 ranger has type e pats? And the 97 explorer pcm didn't have pats would my truck be disable my ability to start?

Nope, PATS is internal to the PCM, and with the ''97, no PATS at all.

Verify your grounds and PCM power, it only takes about a half dozen wires to get your '97 PCM to light off and the fuel pump relay is almost half of those!

Sweet. So I have power to fuel pump it kicks on. I had a fuel leak. Fix that. I tested to see if I had spark and I got solid spark but no fire still. Pcm is powered and communicating to my obd2 reader not full blown snap on but a simple one. So I'm kinda at loss. Now.

I did the fuel return from thr motor added added a new line back to the fuel filter on the tank side of the filter I used the one line ad the return and then installed a one way filter is that correct from what I read?

Your addition of a fuel return from the fuel rail back to the original fuel filter area to then marry the engine's return to the return at the filter is spot on.

Any chance you've got the two fuel lines from the tank crossed? Supplying fuel pressure to the BACK of the FPR and not to the injectors? It's a very easy mistake to make. Perhaps a quick check of your fuel pressure at the fuel rail is in order.

I was thinking that all night last night but the oem connections on the engine and the truck side where thr only ones that were the correct connection but that doesn't say much since it's two different. I'm going find out what is supply and return on the motor. Now.

Ok I checked my fuel line. The 1/2 is supply which my stock truck fuel line connected rught to the supply on the 5.0. The return is 3/8 which that is the return line size I used back to the fuel filter location in which I cut off that oem line fitting off the stock filter and used that so I could use the quick connection so I believe the fuel is correct?

Ok I took the starter signal wire pin 24 on the 42 pin connector and now when I turn the key the engine turns over now. So I got that part going now. But no fire

Ok I had the fuel lines backwards got it running. Bad ass thank you. Now I just need to figure out the alternator wire harness and ac. I have a 2 grey wires to one I loop I thought that was positive but it's grounded when I test it then there is the 4 pin plug . How do I tie them into my 42 pin plug what matches what? Thank you

Did I not say it was an easy mistake to make?

The a/c compressor and alt wiring don't go through the 42 pin connector.

Many have found the original Ranger a/c & alt wiring will work on the 5.0. There's an extra wire on the Ranger's alt plug that loops back to the single wire plug. That wire can be cut away and discarded.
