heater isn't working

Doesn't matter too much now since it's hitting the 70's, but my heater doesn't work very well. I've got a 94 2wd 2.3l. When it does, its only lukewarm. The truck isn't overheating. I'm only worried about it because although it's in the 70's today it might drop into the 30's tomorrow.

Side note, my truck is ridiculously slow. I can barely get it up to 70 mph and stay in 5th gear. Is that normal. before I go and start checking crap I was just curious if that was normal. Stock tires by the way.

for the heat i would check coolant level (if low refill and check for leaks), replace t stat (good maintenance anyway), check heater control valve (if equipped), check water pump weephole and flow in radiator when hot, check for correct flow through heater core in let and outlet should be about the same temp if drastically different heater core is plugged (if plugged you could possibly flush it with mixed results it is better to replace if plugged).

could also be head gasket or cracked head so do glove test on cold engine.

I had this problem with my 94. I'd put my money on the heater core under the dash is clogged.

If I remember, it takes 2 hose clips and 3 screw to remove it and put the new one in. Takes about 30-45 minutes tops. Very easy swap. If you had a 95 or newer, you have to rip the whole dashboard apart to accomplish the same task.

Plan to flush your whole coolant system in the near future. There is a reason those heater cores clog.

Low coolant often gives you heat under throttle, but not on idle.

Check the axle code in your door. If your having a tough time holding 70, I'd bet you low rear end ratio. I have 4.10s in mine and I can do 70 spinning 31s. If that is the case, look around for a new rear axle with a higher ratio and look to swap it in. Best thing you can do.

They're 2.83, I think.. thanks that's a big help I've got everything to do a flush, would that be enough or do I have to replace it?

Flush may help, but no guarantee. I'd say replace. Don't forget to use online coupons and ebates.com. You can get a new heater core pretty cheap that way.

Edit: you should flush regardless.
