Headliner re-covering

My '94 std cab headliner is starting to peel off just above the driver's seat and it's super annoying. As far as I can tell the foam is in ok condition, it's just the liner material that's falling off so far.

I've been researching putting on a new headliner fabric available online or locally at a fabrics store. Should I spring for the foam-backed liner or just the liner? Should I remove all of the existing foam anyway to expose the raw fiberglass shell? Will the new liner adhere better to this fiberglass shell?

Thanks all!

It is recommended to take the foam and all off of the liner shell and replace with a foam backed material of your choice.
My wife and daughter did a super cab liner with material and adhesive I bought from a vendor that specialized in liners of all kinds. the kit was only like 35$. They did a nice job and had never done it before. Just take your time. There's utube videos on how to do it as well.

Good luck
Rich

3M also sells extra strong spray glue for headliners and vinyl tops. I found it at Autozone. www.stockinteriors.com also sells complete new headliners for Rangers that are better than new because they use a plastic backing. I used a Stock Interiors headliner in my Ranger and I'm very happy with it.

^ thanks for the recommendations.

I actually went with a 54"x60" foam-backed suede headliner kit from yourautotrim.com as shown in the TRS faq on headliners. It comes with headliner adhesive that folks seem happy with so I'll give it a go. The kit was only $34, but the shipping was a little high at $16.50 for UPS ground. I did find a 15% off coupon that helped a little. Anyway, once I get some free time I'll get the new headliner material installed and post up some pics.

I had some free time today to knock this out and I took a couple of pics.

Before: the 20 year old liner had started to separate above the driver seat and was sagging down. It kept tickling my head at the worst times, it had to go!

Headliner out and I started the time-consuming process of getting all the foam and liner material off. This took forever!

New foam-backed suede liner installed in charcoal color - looks and feels so much better!

Had enough to do the center console too. Matches the existing light gray OEM material closely enough imo.

This took me way longer than I wanted, especially since I had to keep stopping to do other stuff. In the end it was well worth the effort and makes the interior look almost new. I've still got some material left over so I'll see if it's enough to recover the door cloth trim too. For $45 shipped from yourautotrim.com I am very happy with the result!

I did this in my ranger.
Hardest part for sure was removing the old material. Especially since mine wast sagging-but vandalized and carved into with a knife.

I got my fabric from Joann's fabrics and paid about $35.
Got the glue in a spray can from lowes (can't remember which one-googled it to figure out the strongest one)
Had about $40ish into the whole explorer headliner. Turned out good but very time consuming.
Worth it IMO
