Hard Clutch Pedal?

Hello

a few weeks ago my clutch pedal went limp, wouldnt allow the clutch to engage, couldnt get into gear etc. i had it towed home and ended up tracing the issue to air in the hydraulic system. My truck has 173k on it, so i figured i would replace the entire system outside of the trans (reservoir to fitting on trans and everything in between). The new system came prebled but i set it up for a bench bleed anyway and checked it just to make sure. The setup passed the parameters in the youtube video so i installed it according to their direction (brute force system). After installing the system i did a gravity bleed according to the video, which was opening the bleed valve and letting approximately two reservoirs worth of fluid drain through the system while keeping it topped up so no air can get in. All went according to plan till i got out from under the truck and tried the pedal. It moves about an inch but it just feels like the normal play in the system, otherwise the pedal is rock hard. I did further research online and turned up some information about pumping the pedal as far as you can then waiting a couple minutes and opening the valve on the slave cylinder while having an assistant press the clutch in. The site recommended doing the process 3 times, making sure to close the valve before letting the clutch pedal back out. I havent tried it yet as im unsure if thats what im suppose to do in order to fix my issue. This is my first hydro clutch system and i dont want to do anything wrong and risk damaging parts i cant afford to replace at the moment, so im being very cautious with it all. Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks guys, i appreciate any help that can be given.

Make sure the fitting at the trans is connected fully. If it's not, you'll get the symptoms you describe.

So i disconnected the hose from the trans and reattached it, pushing in until it clicked. tried the pedal and it was soft, better then before, but still soft. no matter, tried to start it up and i heard a slight pop and the pedal went back to being hard. Is there something im missing? i noticed that the plastic sleeve isnt tight against the fitting like the old one was, so maybe theres an obstruction or its not seating completely?

Warning...I'm no pro. The fitting on the master side at the trans is such that it won't allow fluid movement unless it's fully engaged. I would suspect something in the way, whether dirt or ? Just keep trying. I know I always have a bitch trying to get them apart.
Good luck,

Richard

there are two different clutch couplings used across the years and though they are visually similar they are NOT compatible.

The 1988-92 coupler is either "Black" (fades to purple) or Red.

the 1993-up coupler is Gold/Yellow

They SEEM to go together but will tend to either NOT connect or disconnect themselves if you attempt a Mix-n-match

and a "Self disconnect" would seem to describe your symptoms.

a worn female coupler or dammaged "Finger trap spring" inside the coupler would also generate the same set of symptoms.

I just saw on another thread where it was suggested to slightly loosen the slave bleeder while connecting the line, that makes less pressure to overcome. It's worth a try.
