Well, I got a little disappointed in my truck the other day. It's a 2006 and only has 21k miles on it and it already needed a fix. I noticed a few spots on the driveway, so I crawl underneath the truck and see that the transfer case is leaking. There was a wet spot right underneath the output shaft for the rear driveshaft. I checked the fluid and it was about 1/2 quart low :icon_surprised:. I topped it off and brought it to the dealer, tell them to replace the output shaft seal, they fix it, I bring it home.

This morning, I crawl underneath again to check out what they did. I noticed they smeared sealant all along the seam where the two halves of the transfer case meet. I couldn't tell if they replaced the output shaft seal, and I started to worry that they misunderstood me and just put the sealant on and that's it. I called them and they said they did replace the seal, and that it gets replaced from the inside of the t-case. I'm not sure if he just told me that to get me off his back. I'm gonna keep a close eye on it for the next week and see if it leaks anymore.

Oh yeah, and my warranty apparently runs out on March 2nd. Caught it just in time, although it doesn't seem like a very long warranty. I think the new Fords get longer warranties.

I had my 02 ranger for only 4 weeks and the check engine light came on took it back and with the warrnty cost me $113.56 just to figure out why its on. Never again. Ford dealers don't seem to stand behind what they sell. I am going to buy a superchip programmer so if it happend again I can fix it. Think if the check engin light comes on 3 times the programmer pays for its self.

be lucky you don't own a diesel!

i just took my truck in for a service #4, 48,000km (its supposed to be a big one, 115 point inspection, transmission/tcase fluid, diffs, fuel filters, etc..)

that service costed me a whopping $1092.37....i can't believe the stealership's rate for labor came out to be $690....($215 an hour)

i kind of wish i was a ford cert diesel Tech...

My f-250 has 300,000 km warranty on drivetrain/powertrain

Is it true that the seal gets replaced from the inside?

i'm pretty sure it's inside, my 96 used to leak where the tranny and tcase meet, i just put sealant between the two and it stopped the leak.

this is what my 96 looked like when i split the two...of course i twisted off the output shaft.

this is the tcase: you can notice where they mate there was some sort of seal on it...kind of like a spongy material:

I've been ripped off by the only two stealerships I have ever had one of my vehicles go to. Fairview Ford in Fairview, Alberta ripped me off for almost 1000 bucks to chase a problem that turned out to be a simple wiring harness issue. They tried to double charge me for two batteries and the actual part they replaced and 15 hours worth of labour (back when labour rates were in the 50 dollar an hour range).

Fast forward three weeks from then and that same vehicle is sitting in Ken Seargent's shop (GM dealer, but the only one that was open the Saturday I was stranded) in Grande Prairie with the same damn problem. This time the labour and such was reasonable, but the idiots at the dealership left the car out in the lot unlocked. Needless to say I came back to a vehicle that had been cleaned out by the locals. Stereo? Gone. Everything else that wasn't bolted down? Gone. Their response to my enraged complaint was, "It's not our problem."

I have only been to a car stealership twice since, and even then I never approached the service department. I went as far as the parts counter and that was it. Ford, GM, Dodge, Toyota, Nissan, etc. stealerships can all kiss my ass. So can Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Harley Davidson, etc. stealerships for that matter. I wouldn't take any vehicle of mine to the dealer for service work if I had a gun to my head. Nothing but a ripoff.

Danger-Ranger96, thanks, but mine was leaking where the rear driveshaft connects to the t-case, not between the transmission and t-case. Do you know if that seal on the t-case is installed from the inside?

[knock on wood] I've only had one problem while ANY of my 5 Ford trucks were under warranty. The oil pressure sending unit on my 2000 ranger failed at about 18,000 miles. The dealership (which is always busy) placed my truck first in the line of cars to be worked on that morning, and was fixed by lunch time. The dealership apologized for the truck needing warranty work, and gave me a coupon for a free oil change. I can't complain.

The seal for the driveshatf flange should be changeable from the outside as it's on the end of the tailshaft. the seal between the gearbox and t/case is internal of course.

I don't think so.

My '95 Explorer had a similar t-case...I forgot the model number, but it was a Borg Warner with an electric shift motor. Its output shaft seal was replaced from the outside. No need to open or drop the t-case at all.

Don't know about warrany work, since my truck was used. But it has only been in the shop three times. First time was for the timimg belt. Could not break the dang crank shaft nut loose. Second time was to trace a short and install factory cruise control. The short was a blown fuse and they forgot to put back in 2 screws for a bezel (which I find this out 5 years later). Third time was on December 2008 to have them install a complete clutch job. Work was good, clean up is something they could have done better. They left brake fluid residue all over the chassis and tranny. Any other repairs, I have done myself. Second timing belt, alternator, A/C repair, brakes, shocks, tires, fluids, belts, etc.

I would get the exteneded warranty if I was you. Most vehicles are going to have issues by 20000 miles+. You think 21,000 is to early for a warranty fix, try 8500mi.:D I had a heat sheild replaced that somehow broke this winter as well as a window motor that was loose in the door since the first day I got the truck. The window made a loud thump when all the way down. I took care of it the same day as the heat sheild. The mechanic said he didnt think anything was wrong with the window until he compared it with the other one. He said it was probably done at the assembly plant. I wonder if it could have been done during rust protection. Both were fixed free under warranty.

I also have a few other issues that Im worried about as well. Noting major but things that are bugging me. I did a review thread on my 08' in the duratec section if your interested.:icon_cheers:

wierd the window motor was loose, their riveted into the door from the factory. speaking of warranties, I keep getting phone calls from some scammer telling me my factory warranty is abut to run out, and to buy theirs. funny as the truck is 15 years old and 183k miles. I guess ford was giving away one hell of a warranty back in 94!
