Short of going to a body shop, I get my f/g/r at walmart or lowes or home depot, and I haven't seen gelcoat available at these places. Where would be a good place to get these as well as different ounces of mat/cloth??

check the phone book for plastics shops.most citys will have one,and they will be able to get you anything you need,as well as good advice on use of the product.

the money saved shopping at the big-box stores can easilly be offset by the lack of knowledge and variety available.

I only went there for lack of knowing where to get "the good stuff"...

Is there maybe a boat shop near you, that does repairs? They might be able to either hook you up with 'glass supplies, or provide leads to where to get them. Just a thought.

Closest boat place to me about an hour away, and I'm not sure if they repair or just sell em, maybe I need to come visit Tom, learn the trade then start my repair shop here, especially since I'm near great fishing waters for my area...

that's risky business, you know how he feels about apprentices

Yep, it'd be one of those I stand back and watch him run around type apprentices..:icon_rofl:

What will you be using as a release agent? If you have some secret formula then feel free to keep it a secret.

car wax works, recently I discovered PAM works good, as well as lubricating silicone spray, but again, these may or may not have a reaction to the paint that I have not tried it on...

it'll be available at the same place you find the other f/g supplies.wax is nice to use,but it's risky on molds that have areas like the scoops on this one.one stuck part can ruin a mold, and i don't want to chance that.

the 'pva' stands for poly vinyl alcohol...it's a water soluble liquid that can be brushed or sprayed on the mold, and it dries to a thin impermeable film,so it gives the paint on the plug some more protection from the solvents in the resin.once the parts are separated it washes off with plain water.

i've never had a separation failure while using this stuff, but you do lose a bit of gloss....not much though.many purists in the trade consider using pva to be cheating-i say piss on them,it works.

Whale blubber sounds like a great idea, wonder if it's available in a spray can?
