I haven't had a lot of transmission trouble in my life so I'm hoping someone can help guide me a bit.
A month ago, the manual transmission on the '97 Ranger I drive every day started getting tougher to get into gear. Then, the rattling/grinding/scraping sound people describe started happening when the clutch pedal was depressed. Usually in low spurts, but occasionally surging way up loudly.
I swapped out the old black transmission fluid, and it seemed to calm down a little, for a while. Could've been coincidence. Since then it's come back in waves, and now is nearly constant.
Whatever the degree of rattle/scrape/etc., it dies away all or none when I re-engage the clutch.
While idling, or in 1st, or in reverse, sometimes the transmission suddenly engages briefly and somewhat forcefully.
My first searches made it sound like it was a slave cylinder. Recently a friend heard it and said it sounded like a throwout bearing. Like I said, my tranny awareness is pretty low. Anyone have a good sense of what I'm describing?
