I work, go to school(auto tech), and have pretty much lived on my own for 2 years. I am going to school now, but back when I was applying for student aide, I wasn't eligible. My mom has 3 kids to provide for, my dad 2. They only make a certain amount, but that is just enough to keep thier households up. So, because I am not 24, in the military, have a kid, or married, they expect me to pay my way through school on a 35-39hr a week job being paid $7.60/hr. Also having to pay all of my bills, and gas 60miles a day M-Th. WTF? Or wait, they expect me to still live with my parents, and for them to pay my way. Another way our government is #$%&ed up. Any other suggestions on some type of aide? I haven't found any scholarships I am eligible for. What else is there besides federal aide? I already had to pull out a student loan for this year. But maybe I'm missing something.

Financial Aids is a joke. The people who f*ck up their lives are the ones who get tuition for free. It all goes back to the "nice guys finish last" saying.

Have a baby, free schooling, illegal immigrant... We shure wouldn't want to disrespect them, free schooling, your family is broke ass poor because they refuse to work, free schooling.

How about we drop all those people on their ass, and pay for the responsible student who know's how to use birth control, enter the country legally, and works 9-5 to try and make something of themselves.

Naaa...

You have just hit on one of my most opinionated topics.

I forgot to add.... Congrats on making something of yourself!!

That is the main reason I think I joined the military (other than just to see what it was like, but I'm quickly regretting it)

Paying for that shit can and is tough. I have no idea how to do it, but I'm definitely going to get something out of the people's responses here. I could call up the guy I bought my Ranger off of. He lives in Kansas City and drove four days a week to Warrensburg, MO (75 miles one way) for five years. I know he's single (and queer) and his only job is a mower along the side of highways.

But.... I don't know what all kind of pay he makes because that is a MODot job.

AMEN!!!

Try and get a job that has tuition reimbursment. If you live by a major airport check out Dollar Rent-A-Car or Thrifty Rent-A-Car. They're both the same company and they pay 75 or 100% tuition reimbursment for automotive. I tried the student aide thing and it didn't work out too. Also in Texas I know that you get a little bit of your tuition back around income tax time. How much are class' where you are? Here they are about $200 a course at my local community college. Which to me is funny cause they're more expensive in Mississippi (the poorest state in the US).

yeh it all depends. Are your parents married or divorced? my girlfriends mom makes about 80k a year, but has her and her sister. somehow my girlfriend has her education almost all paid for because of it being a single income. my roomate on the other hand has to do everything her self. rent, tuition, books, the whole thing because her parents are married (who also have about 80k of income) You may want to try becomming independent. Meaning you are no longer dependent on your parents. Now because you make such little money, you will now qualify for gov aide. However your parents will lose out on a tax cut because that is one less child that they have as a dependent. another downside to this is you might lose health insurance from your parents because you are no longer dependent. look into this and see. also depending on the school, college v universitys, most universities offer basic health care for students for free or super low cost.

If the Clinton/Obama team is elected, the problem will only get 10x worse.

First thing, the government DOESN'T OWE YOU A THING.

We do not have free public higher education in the US. If you want it, call your congressperson.

It's difficult to work one's way through college. But somehow, I managed to do so, with token help from parents and an $8/hour paid student internship. With no loans.

Federal financial aid (LEARN to spell that if you want people to take you seriously) has never been adequately funded. Not for any of the groups Jspafford mentioned either; such is the problem with generalizations (so tell us, have you actually MET anyone that fits your description AND has a Federal free ride? I thought not). And you have it EASIER than most of the folks here BECAUSE you are legally on your own. Were you not, your parents' assets would be included in the calculation. Which really gets you up the creek if they own a house. That's how I got screwed.

As a matter of fact my Fiancee just graduated from Capital University in Bexley. She now has almost 100K in loans.. That is just what she has to pay after her scholarships. She went to school with at least a handful of girls who got a free ride because they were with child.

Maybe the didn't get all four years paid for, but if they (the goverment, or ANYONE for that matter) paid for ANY of it because they got knocked up, it just isin't right.

So here we are... Right now she can't find a teaching job, I am the only one working and have been since we've been together, other than her part time in the summer. We now have 100K to pay off, plus getting married in September and need a place to live. A little help anyone?

I can't even imagine myself trying to go to college with this much financial obligation we currently have.

I am under the CLEAR OPINION, that K-8 should just deal with the basics, math, reading and writing. and High School should be toward your profession, and College should be for like Scientist, and engineers.

But since the school system is broken beyond belief(any of the presidental Candidates talking about fixing this?) It would almost make sense that since we got broken school system, and we will not fix it, that we just expand the school system to include public universities free of charge.

I take quite a bit of offense to that Justin. I am 20, married, with 7 month old baby. I work 40+ hours a week, a volunteer firefighter, and my wife and I both go to school fulltime (15 credit hours this semester, got a 4.0 last semester I might add.) I am elligible for full financial aide. Did I **** up my life? No. I am right where I want to be. I am sorry if you think that I am a **** up but to most I am considered a hard working, motivated person. Financial aid exists for people like myself. I can understand being pissed at the people that used their financial aid money to party, buy dvds, and the like ( I know a few like that ) but you can't say that I am a **** up. In fact I am proud of where I am at and what I have accomplished.

Would I be in school without financial aid? Yes. But it makes it so we don't have to wonder where our next meal is going to come from.

You and your wife did not use your baby as a way to get into college though. There is nothing wrong with having a baby when your young, but too many people find it an easy way to get everything for free. The fact that you work and volunteer says more than enough about the kind of person you are. If you took offense, then I apoligize, but there are people who milk the system and it happens quite a bit.

Unless we sign on for a very socialized form of government, and all the good and bad that comes with it, we can't bitch when nobody comes forward and gives us tuition.

And I don't see why anyone who wasn't on honor role all through high school should just get lots of grants for college....not unless they can PROVE they had to make money for their family to live.

we have two common ways to go to college here.one is hope scholarship funded by our lottery, you have to have good grades and keep good grades through college.the other,if one parent works for state college system, their offspring go for free.living expenses and books not included in either case as far as i know.there are the traditional gov assistance programs available as you folks are talking about.if it takes years you have to find the way to do it,don't wait for the government.work thy ass off, make it happen.

I have 5 teenagers at home. My wife attends college ($2700/semester) and works. I just restarted college (17 credits this semester, $3500 to clear up owing amounts + $2200 tuition/semester + $700 books & fees/semester). I get NO financial aid of any kind. Parents cannot help. I still work 50 hours/week (mostly on the weekends and nights) on top of that and maintain a 3.8gpa.

Why are you complaining?

I agree about people not getting paid for being irresponsible. However, I take responsibility for my own actions instead of bitching about others. This is my opinion. If you don't like it, don't read it.
