More government mandated "safety features" coming 2018

While taking care of my nephew I learned a scary statistic...there are nearly 100,000 head injuries every year in the US and Canada...often leaving the victims unable to function in society without an incredibly long recovery and rehab....

I would start wearing a helmet if I could get one on my head and still be able to sit in my Ranger...and seriously considering upgrading to having air bags since my 96 came with them...just not sure if I want one for my passenger since I would have to buy the detonator and the air bag due to it somehow disappearing...aside from the fact that I rarely carry passengers...might want one for the hanging plants and the statues in the front seat...

We all know where this is going. Pretty soon it'll be fully automatic. Get in tell the car where you want to go and it takes you there. All the while reporting every thought the onboard computer has to some government agency and/or your insurance company.

The question is: Will they realize it's wrong when the only major software running all of the cars on the road has some kind of glitch. You know the kind where people die.

A good idea, one of those plants could end up a vegitable.

:icon_rofl:

Now how did I miss that one...:icon_thumby:

This is probably the very reason the main reason why I have delayed going to FI...not so much the software as the components...and why it would be a very good example of why we should not rely too much on technology...hopefully not too late for those who do.

People don't pay attention while they're driving as it is. The more "safety features" added the less and less people pay attention. They figure that overpriced car will protect them. In quite a few cases the occupants would have survived if the airbag didn't blow up in their face. People have been surviving serious accidents for generations without all the nannies in vehicles. All these things do is create a false sense of security for those who really shouldn't be driving to begin with.

Absolutely wildbill. Drivers are considered careless to begin with and the more added the more careless.

Now they are discovering this with airline pilots and the automated systems on aircraft. Even though they do get put thru regular emergency training, they are discovering with all the automated systems that pilot competence in basic aircraft handing is degrading. And no matter how many emergency simulations one goes thru, having solid basic skills are the best way to be ready for anything truly unexpected.

Sorry but there have been many times when people didn't blow through the plate glass windshield and land in a poofy quaint little haystack to live happily ever after before they started caring about safety stuff.

Sorry but air bags make sense. Seat belts make sense.

The cars of today are vastly better in a wreck than the cars of yesteryear. The advanced traction control and automatic AWD may boost peoples confidence in their ride but NOBODY drives more careless on the belief that it doesn't matter because the airbag will save them.

I agree, they don't drive more careless because they have more confidence. That was a bogus argument put forth to explain why cars with antilock brakes had a higher accident rate than cars without. Assertion being that people thought I have super stopping ability so they will drive faster...NOT

I also agree that they drive more careless because the car is doing more of the driving which enables them to pay attention to more interesting things like cell phones, eating, and daydreaming.

If it was an option back in the day they would have been trying to do it with manual cars too. They are not doing it because they are smart...
