Does anybody know where my 4WD went??

Well, I found out why I lost 4WD when I was out at Turkey Bay.

I find it wierd that I didn't blow a u-joint yet (have 228k miles on truck, original joints):icon_surprised: Well, as I took my diff housing out, I noticed I had excessive pinion side to side play, and figured I stripped my R&P gears, so I guess I got lucky there, but instead of my R&P gears, it was my spiders, but I still had pinion play. So I pulled it apart and found my bearings were toast...So I now need to practically rebuild the front end again...I have a spare carrier that I was goin to use the spiders from to replace them, but when I went to install the spiders, the splined spider didn't fit into the carrier:icon_confused: So now I have to pull my Ring gear off, and install it onto the other carrier I have, along with installing new carrier bearings, pinion bearings and setting up the axle all over again:annoyed: So I started cleaning up the parts and guess what else I find...

Anyone see anything wrong with this picture:icon_idea:

I checked all the stores (AZ, Advance, Oreilly's), and Oreilly's said they had it in stock for $13, but when I got there they had to order it as no store stocked it and it would take 4 days to get in:annoyed: Sooo once I get everything back together (and spending close to $100, which I would rather spend on my SAS, I will be ready to go back to Turkey Bay with 4WD again:yahoo:

tell me about it! youve been begging me the last 2 weekends :D

Great news! I just got a line on 96 4.0L SOHC engine, harness and ECU I should be getting for next to nothing, wish list so far is to rebuild it with forged internals, P&P heads, setup to to run around 15 psi boost...Think I'm gonna go this route instead of the V8 swap...Whats everyone's thoughts on this??

well, if ya want MY OPINION ( and we know how much that is worth :icon_rofl::icon_rofl::icon_rofl: ) .....i say do a mild performance rebuild and leave it NA....

Turbo's aren't really for a trail truck....just something else to have issues with...such as stuffing the IC full of mud at #4.....:D:D

I totally agree with John. But it is your truck do as you please.

if you want to do forced induction do a supercharger cause the turbo lag will make it a PITA. But the constant pressure of a SC would give you better control.

There is a major misconception of turbochargers and lag time. Technology and the understanding of turbos has come a long way, and turbocharged systems can be designed where vertually no lag time is experienced. I have already built and designed a turbo system that will give me up to about 25 psi boost and very little lag time...My boost will start building at around 1400 rpm (right off idle) and have full boost starting around 2000 rpm, the operating range of trailriding (most of what we do) is from 2k-3.5k rpm, so it is designed and will be built to fit my style of driving and wheelin

ok, i can see that kinda around the street racer people alot where they push on the gas and.......................WAHHHHHHH. takes abit of time but if it works for you go for it just protect the intake haha don't want sand and mud in your tubines

there's a problem though...when boost comes in rpms's start going through the roof and then the trans starts shifting...so your stuck sitting still on the rev limited tearing the hell out of everything while the tires are spinning 100mph.....if it was a pre runner or something where you stay up in the rpm's id say its a go but for the stuff we do and the terrain we have id say its going to be more of a pain in the ass then anything...

but agin its your truck...but i like to stay on the trail and not off the side wrenching every 20 minutes

My old Eclipse started boosting hard around 2k, it was a 1990 model. Below that it wasn't anything too special. Factory spec on it was 11psi, and for the kick in the pants that little 2.0 got going much higher on a bigger engine would be a waste of time on a truck for offroading, I don't think you could control it.

Modern diesel turbos are either twins or VGT's, and they still have a tiny bit of lag.

Every factory twin turbo diesel setup I've seen uses a compound turbo setup, one small turbo feeding a larger turbo, I will be using two very small turbos, one for each engine bank, making my lag virtually non existent...But thats another good thing about turbos, if there is a problem with boost on the trail, all I have to do is remove the outlet to the throttle body, and bolt on an intake tube and filter to the TB and I'm good to go, bypassing the turbo, it can freespool all it wants, won't hurt anything til I get back to the garage to either tune it better or remove it, depending on its attitude on the trail....More than likely I will put them on, and test it out in the backyard before I run it at TB...I also will have to see how much power I will have from the rebuild and upgrades...
