Gathering information to rebuild my transmission.

I got the Chilton manual in the mail yesterday. I've been looking through it, and it covers removal and installation of things, but nothing of the insides of the transmission. So I'm glad to have the electronic info that Shran sent, as well as the videos to look at.

The transmission jack arrived today! And I've got the lawn mower off the workbench. Time to clean up and prepare to tackle this transmission.

The truck is lifted up! Took me all day to get everything where I felt safe to be underneath.

Each corner has two ways to keep it from squishing me. Plus the 3 ton jack to support whatever I'm needing it for at the moment. I was able to get the drive shaft disconnected from the transfer case last night. Today I hope to get the transfer case removed. I found a video specifically on removing it:

Meanwhile, the battery is having a lovely spa day in the basement. It got a bath, the terminal posts are shined up, and it's sitting in room temperature on a battery maintainer. I've also got the gear shifter and other parts inside the cab removed.

I read last night that the drive shaft is supposed to be marked before removal because it's balanced. I don't know what that means, but I'll mark it today. Hopefully it's in the same orientation as it was when connected, but I didn't pay attention, so I can't really be sure. I wonder how vital this is.

You don't have to mark the driveline where it goes on the axle, that's being too anal... the important thing is the U joints stay in phase, yours likely has a carrier bearing in the middle and I don't think you can get those too mixed up and they're likely keyed at the splines...

Electric T case should be pretty easy, there's that one brown wire that doesn't have a connector if I remember right, the balance weight thing gets in the way so you have to take that off, don't remember having to take the shift motor off...

The hard part is fishing the transmission through the exhaust, it would have been nice if they'd moved the Y pipe 2" forward if I remember right...

Well that's good, because I forgot to mark it again. The front drive shaft came off pretty easy. The top bolt securing the case to the transmission was the most difficult, but I eventually got it. Someone put red thread locker on the bolts. Anyway, the case came away from the transmission easy, and I lowered it with the transmission jack. Only one connector had to be disconnected for the electrical.

I was also able to get the starter motor off too. One of the three bolts was already loose. The other two didn't give me much trouble. I've been under the impression that the exhaust pipe needs to be out of the way to remove the transmission. I got what I think is the catalytic converter out today. The three nuts in the front were fine, but the two in the back were nearly impossible. I tried oil, a breaker bar, an impact driver, heat, a reciprocating saw, and finally a hammer and chisel. I won, but now I can't lift my right arm.

I'm getting a collection of fasteners now.
