I just bought a 92 ranger for a parts truck and the motor makes this wierd noise and won't go faster than 15 like it has no power. I pulled the dip stick and noticed it smelled like gas. I don't need the motor but would like to get it running cause the truck is much nicer than I thought it was. Any ideas, cause I'm thinking a hole in the piston.

Bad fuel regulator

Your fuel regulator is bad. It is located drivers side at back of fuel rail. Do not run engine !!!! Replace fuel regulator flush engine and do oil change. If you run engine you stand a good chance of wiping all the bearings.

Ok, ill do that tomorrow. Thanks, hopefully its not to late.

+1 on fuel pressure regulator! Some things that might be worth looking at - Check the vacuum line for raw fuel after running shortly, and check with a fuel pressure gauge if it's not obviously blown. But the symptoms fit.

You should also check your fuel injectors. I had a few that leaked on my 2.9 when the FPR turned out to be good. Don't forget to change your oil after its fixed

Check fpr

Check the fuel pressure regulator first i have had two 2.9 liter engines with bad fprs and fprs are a lot cheaper then injectors

YA, this answers MANY questions, thanks for the Post, AND the answer.
