Borrowed a neighbors timing light, and was looking around for a 4.0 and found something better. A 5.0 out of an unknown year econoline van, which he said ran good before he pulled it. Everything is complete, and it has the gt40 looking intake on it. I can get it for 250 complete with ac comp, ps, alt, everything.

Ok so here's my plan:
Take the efi off and run a basic aftermarket intake mani and a carb, then later on go stand alone efi on it.

First main question is what do I buy the intake for?(Earlier model 302?)
I don't want egrand I want to use a duraspark disty.

Ok what year motor do I buy a complete gasket kit for? Buy an efi gasket set and just use the new carb intake manis gasket?

Also would I be fine using the stock 2.8 mm's with a homemade mm plate? I've seen diagrams for the plates that showd the length of the holes that attach to the block, but not width for how far overthe holes need to be drilled to attach to the stock mounts. Is it just align motor where u want and drill?

Will I have to mod my firewall to use the bigger m5odr2? Gonna heat my heater box and shape it, so not worried about that

Last but not least, is this a good motor for a swap? How does it compare to an h.o?

You can get the date code off the block to tell for sure what year it is.
Does that engine have a double hump oil pan? If not you'll need one with a pick up tube.

The guy who pulled it couldn't tell you the year?

He owns a towing service, and also buys wrecked cars, and he said he couldn't remember what year.

It doesn't have the double hump pan, but I already knew I needed one of those. Ill go over and check the code on it and see what it is

To me it looked more like an explorer motor then a truck motor, but has the big 164 tooth flexplate on it

Ok its from a 95 econoline van

It's a keeper. It'll be the same long block as the 95 Stang had, but with a slightly smaller (F4TE) roller cam, which works great with a carbed setup. As for intake choices here's a few: Ford A321, Edelbrock RPM, Weiand Stealth. Top it with a Holley 570 Street Avenger carb. You'll need a reman 85 Mustang HO distributor (manual transmission application) to match the roller cam. These distributors are available at your local parts house for about $50-75 with a good core.

Well I have access to a new b cam from my uncle if I give him the efi mani, would that be a good cam to run? Any upgrades I should do before I swap it in if I decide to buy it?

The B cam is a good-un, better if run with 1.7 full roller pedestal rockers, as is the F4TE cam. 1.7's increase the lift at the valve by .030 and full rollers free up HP by reducing the frictional losses. Crane's Energizer line or the Cobra roller rockers were a great bolt on for this. Change the pushrods too if you do this, they wear at the rocker ends due to the lack of rotation with the roller lifters.

Ok so I've been looking at the projection and avenger efi tbi kits, and they show them running at 15 psi. Is that low enough to use the factory carbed fuel lines? Are they a return type system?

I would think the stock line would take 15lbs...

Mine had a nylon line roughly 1/4" diameter for the main line, and a little bitty bugger for the vent. No return that I encountered.

If you take and run high pressure line from the fuel pump to the motor (IE, located the pump close to the motor) you will be ok with that...

For some reason I thought u wanted the pump close to the tank, maybe that's high pressure setups. Picked my motor up and cam tonite, started the teardown and cleaning/painting process. Any reccomendations on an oil pump? Guy trade me the oil pan for a fox double sump, so that's taken care of

The instructions for my Mr Gasket pump said to mount as close to the tank as possible, but it runs about half of your 14psi.

I got a Melling oil pump, driveshaft and pickup at the local parts store, they work great.

What about the oil filter relocation? I heard some leak and some don't. Which ones don't? I don't want any leaks on this thing when its all together

I'm used a Transdapt 90* block adapter with local made hydraulic hoses, zero leaks in 8 years.
