Fluid change m5od - Stuck fill plug

I never was able to get the fill plug off. Our jack is broken so I couldn't get it in the air to get more leverage. I needed to get it running for work this week so I just pulled the drain plug and guess what poured (slowly) out? Gear oil. Big clumps of it. I filled it up with ATF and put in the new shifter bushings. It shifts much better now. I'm going to drain and refill again this weekend to try and flush out more of the bad gear oil.

Hopefully I can get it up in the air so I can remove the fill plug so I don't over fill the transmission.

Thanks for all of the advice!

I fill through the shifter hole.. the last three pumps I bought snapped of in the jug after 5 or 6 pumps....

Mark,

Check this out before your next transmission or diff. refill. http://www.princessauto.com/pal/en/Marine/Outboard-Motor-Oil-Pump/8167512.p

Thanks Paul, I actually have one very similar to that I use for gas but I would have had to cut the stem to make it fit under my truck...but I will check them out...:icon_thumby:

Gear oil? :icon_confused:

I've heard of putting stuff like Lucas oil in the transmission to help smooth out rough shifting...but gear oil seems a bit too thick...were there any filings on the drain plug?

First time I pulled mine out it was covered in filings...they could have been there since the truck was "broken in" and I haven't checked the plug since.

Mark, All that was on the plug was a thick black paste like substance. I'm going to do another drain/refill this weekend with some mercon V and hopefully it will get the rest of the built up gunk out of the transmission.

My transmission has a loud whine when in every gear except fourth. I'm going to go for a rebuild this summer.

I think the fluid swap would be sufficient...or I'd hope so for your sake. My M5OD has over 440,000 and last summer was making a whining noise. I topped it up with TransMedic because it was down a half quart (which in itself may cause noise) and it quieted down.

It still shifts smooth and is quiet...I don't abuse it anymore like I did when I first got the truck so that helps quite a bit.

It was whining pretty good when I bought it so I knew going in that it would have to be addressed. I hoped changing the fluid would help it but I think the damage has already been done and it will need a rebuild.

What fluid do you put in yours?

Just plain old dex/merc is what it calls for. I use the same fluid in my trans, t-case, doubler, and power steering.

Chances are if its whining... the input pocket bearing is toast as is the snout of the output shaft. If it gets hot enough, the oil slinger will melt and plug the oil passages completely and then it all goes down hill real quick.

Yes, I just use the regular transmission fluid...but the TransMedic was an additive that cost about the same a bottle of regular and I've used it before on the same transmission before I pulled it and all the fluid drained out of the tail...something I didn't expect to happen and didn't stop it up.

I'd try the fluid change first and if that doesn't help at least you did what you could do with it.

Only problem with dropping the transmission is the y pipe might be in the way...I was going to swap a 3.0 into mine at one time but realized I'd have to remove the exhaust...just the look of those bolts gave me shudders and images of having broken exhaust bolts, the work of having to remove them, plus possibly having to replace the Y pipe (at $150+ just for the pipe) and other exhaust parts quickly made up my mind to look for something else.
