Fluid change in my manual tranny

I feel stupid for asking this but where do I fill it????? Its the 1988 fm146
And I know the later manuals had three fill plugs on the back of where the shifter goes in. So on this do I just pour it down the hole the shifter goes into?

You will have a 24mm drain bolt on the bottom of the pain to drain all the used fluid. And on the drivers side of the transmission up towards the top is i believe a 16mm plug that you remove to add fluid. Make sure you use 80w-90 in it too. Learned the hardway on my old transmission that it takes 80w-90, auto parts store told me it too Dexron and it ****ed my shit up.

Thanks! I already know about the drain bolt. But that's a big mess up for an auto parts store to tell you it takes something that says automatic transmission fluid on the bottle. I personally wasn't sure on was weight but I knew it took gear oil. I was going to use 90w so I'm. Glad I didn't know how to fill it because that's what would be in it rite now. I'm just going to go return that now haha

90W is just fine in your tranny. It's very similar to 80-90W. I filled mine, after a rebuild, through the shifter hole on top. As the oil is as thick as honey, it helps to get the bottle as vertical as possible above the tranny.

FM 146 is a pain to refill.
I use a fluid pump and warm gear oil.
You could fill through the shifter, put in
the amout it says the trans holds, wait
a bit then check the level. I don't know
that I would leave that plug out as some fluid
may run down the inside of the case and give you a false full.
Warm is defintiely good for that gear oil!

I had the same questions a few weeks ago and auto parts guys told me it is ATF too. FM145/FM146 is gear oil however.

And as adms08 told me in my thread, it is at the black dot in this pic.

As Hitchner said, it is on the driver side. And if you are confused like me and see more than one black dot, it is more a dark circle than dot with the upper left portion of the circle heaviest. It is the one closest to the transmission pan where the drain is. It isn't any of them up by the shifter.

Another PITA is that getting at the fill plug on the vehicle there isn't much space. Sure you can get the bottle there but not at a good angle with quart bottles. I could only get a half a quart in at a time and had to combine the partial bottles to get a full to get more in. fortunately having three quart bottles, the capacity is a bit less than 2 1/2 quarts so the fact I couldn't get in the last half quart without going to some siphon or transfer to smaller bottle wasn't a problem.

So really it doesn't matter where I fill it as long as its 4.8 pints and somewhere between 80 and 90w?

I like to take the fill plug out and then pour it in the shifter hole.
