I have a 2001 ranger 4x4 with the 4.0l. I had the dreaded timing chain cassette failure. I have the engine out and figured I would do the rear main while I had it out. However, after replacing the seal, I noticed the old bolts felt like tty bolts when I went to re torque them. So, I stopped and looked it up, and sure enough, they are. No one has them here locally and the dealership wants 70 bucks for them. They also won't have them for over a week. They had to special order them. I really want to get it done this next week. So, my question is, if I throw away the tty bolts and replace them with regular bolts, will it cause issues? I mean, I understand under high heat or high clamp load circumstances that it would be a no go. However, prior to 2001, the 4.0l didn't even use tty bolts on the flexplate. So, with that in mind, could I get by with it?

I can't say for the SOHC, but the OHV work with regular bolts.

Well, I didn't have any luck finding the right bolts anywhere. They are a m10 x 1.00. My local parts stores and hardware store didn't carry that thread pitch. I guess I am just going to have to wait for the dealership to get them.

is there a Fastenal nearby?
sometimes I get a box of 25 or 50 bolts from a local industrial supplier for the same price as 4 OEM bolts.
my local Do-It-Best has a great selection of metric bolts.

Check Summit Racing or Jegs. The metric equivalent of grade 8 bolts(Google says 10.9) will work fine. I don't like torque to yield bolts.

The nearest fastenal is about 50 miles from me. I tried Lowes, Atwood, and a handful of small local places. I might try Fastenal tommorow. Thanks!

I just took a quick look and didn't see anything that would work from them. I will keep looking though. Thanks for the ideas though, it is greatly appreciated!

Our local hardware store is a Do-It-Best and a lot of their stuff is Chinese, be careful buying bolts from them for automotive use.

Try McMaster-Carr - https://www.mcmaster.com/

Caterpillar dealers are a really awesome source of bolts too, FYI. Most of them are also grade 9 (impossible to find anywhere else) and they have a cool CAT logo on the bolt head. Back before we had Fastenal, I bought a lot of bolts there. I only bought SAE bolts but they might have metric ones too.

Now that our Fastenal doesn't take walk-in customers, I might have to start going back there.
