Is there an aftermarket/other option available for the fan shroud that's only the top, rather then the box-like enclosure? I thought I saw something like that on a YouTube video i was watching. It would be handy to have one of those for ease of removal.

It's a few towns over so I can't check right now.. but pretty sure the shroud on my 96 is sort of like what you describe. If I'm remembering right.. the shroud on my truck really only spans the proverbial 10-to-2.

Those are more of a finger guard than a shroud, they literally say "CAUTION FAN" and in smaller print "VEHICLE NOT EQUIPPED FOR AIR CONDITIONING" if memory serves, I haven't ran a shroud on my '90 for years, I just had a 4.0L shroud for several years but it's near useless being like 4" diameter bigger than the fan, an efficient shroud should be within 1/2" of the fan...

maybe you can just cut yours in the middle? use some type of velcro or some type of clip to hold them together when installed and just unvelcro/clip when you want to remove the top half?

Ditto what you're talking about is more accurately a "guard" than a "shroud". They're for non-A/C trucks, and at least in '94 the manual says they were 2.3L-only.

Since the actual 2.3L fan shroud was junkyard-only when I needed one, I wouldn't be surprised if the guard is the same.

It doesn't really bring any cooling to the table, so I personally wouldn't bother. Stick a decal on the rad support if you need to remind people to be careful around the fan.

EDIT: This might be the cheapest one on ebay. I might also have one in storage, but I haven't really kept track of it.

I'd be willing to get rid of mine.

Ten fingers IS probably slightly overkill to begin with... but im gonna be ditching my mechanical fan and going electric so I won't need it. I'd rather see it go to someone who'll use it rather than send it to the dump.

I have never seen a full shroud on a 4 cylinder truck - just the curved finger guard that goes over the top of the fan. That is for sure the case up to '99 which is the newest 4 cylinder truck I've worked on so I can't speak to anything newer than that. V6 trucks all had full shrouds - and they really need them for the cooling system to work right.

IMO the radiators on 83-97 4 cylinder trucks are crazy efficient at keeping them cool. In the winter I almost never see normal operating temp with mine unless I have the radiator blocked off with cardboard. They cool too well and it's almost annoying. Thus they don't need a shroud to direct air through the radiator... that is NOT the case with V6 trucks, a shroud is absolutely necessary.

I agree, I blocked 2/3 of the radiator for the winter on my '97 or I don't get heat under 50F which is super annoying. On my '90 turbo ranger I have the big 4L radiator in it and no shroud but I get heat down into the teens just fine no matter what even just idling... not sure on the difference other than the coolant running through the intake manifold...

I've seen one 4 cylinder with full shroud, should have taken it...
