I'm replacing the radiator (leaky) and fan (cracked). I don't have the 'special tool' to hold the water pump pulley while loosening the fan clutch nut. I tried a strap wrench but the pump is still turning. Any other suggestions on how to hold it? Also.. according to my Haynes manual, the large clutch nut is "left hand thread". Is that correct?

Pull the pump with the fan on it. Put pulley in vise with some wood to keep it from getting buggered up and tighten the vise just enough to get the fan loose. Try to keep the pulley clamped as close to the solid face as possible to avoid squashing it to an egg shape.......
I just did mine a month ago the same way. Also, check the shroud for which nut you have. My '91 was right hand........

4.0L's have right handed fan threads.

Try using a long chisel and hammer to tap the nut loose... always worked for me.

Crap.. turns out I was fighting myself. Right hand thread as you guys said (and it also says "right hand thread" on the shroud")!

I just went through the same mess,, "listening" to the haynes manual, LOL. I bent the special tool. I ended up taking the whole thing off with pump attached
undid two bolts off of the pulley so I could slide a crescent wrench down in there and held the pulley with a big ass monkey wrench.
