Extended warranty HOSERS claim $825 for an alternator swap!!

OTOH, it's not really accurate to call the classic Porsche engines AIR-cooled, as they are OIL-cooled to a large extent as well, and IIRC, there was a sizeable oil-cooler up front there somewhere... which will no longer be needed... or... ?

Every air cooled engine is really cooled by oil, from a 5hp Briggs to a radial Pratt & Whitney water-methonal injected turbo-supercharged aircraft engine.

The oil is the main thing all the fins are supposed to cool.

If you mean all the fins on the oil-cooler, then YES, if you mean all the fins on the cylinders and cylinder heads, then NO, as these latter fins are directly dissipating the heat of combustion, and piston-ring friction. Oil injectors in the crankcase spray the underside of each piston on each stroke; the heat transferred from piston to oil is carried to the oil cooler.

While Porsche+VW achieved nearly aircraft levels of power/weight ratios with their earlier air-cooled mills (IIRC there was an ultralight pusher design that used a Beetle engine), supposedly the water-cooled Subarus are significantly higher yet!... and cleaner burning!

In 1992, I needed to replace the alternator on my 87 Caravan, while on the road. The Dodge dealer in, or near Helena Montana wanted 390 bucks for one. So, the figure in the scare-mercial could be accurate today. BTW - went to NAPA and got one for 85 or so, blew that one in North Platte Nebraska two weeks later. Just kept replacing them for free every two weeks or so until I got one that lasted.

Yeah, I see that now... I was just having Ranger-bias when I first saw it. The ALT has gotta be one easy swap on a 3.0 Ranger, eh?

Yeah, that's what reman'd in Mexican sweatshop gets you I guess. Brother had the same "exchange program" going on with the alternator on his 2000 Caravan from Advanced Auto... 3rd time lucky IIRC, lol.

Going back to the Warranty issue... I paid an extension on the warranty for my Ranger, just to find out that the electric and electronics parts (most of them) are not covered by it. The dealer wanted $620.00 just to change the coil pack. I paid $96.00 for ACCEL's coil pack and installed it myself. The only reason That I can think will worth paying an extension on the warranty is for a powertrain mayor failure/breakeage. So if Your car is Young but mainteneance has not been THAT good... maybe you should buy an extension on the waranty.
