bought a 96 4.0L ranger recently that burned oil bad, so i swapped a 93 4.0L engine into it, swapped over all sensors etc. engine cranks over fine and it starts then dies after 2 seconds. If i repeatedly push the gas pedal down itll rev up again but if i keep the gas pedal to the floor it just dies. All sensors worked before the swap. cmp synchronizer is in properly, checked the MAF to make sure it was clean. Im at a loss as to what would cause this. My 93 dakota quit on my this weekend and i need this truck running by monday!!!

Mine was doing something similar to this, it turned out my idle air control (located on the throttle body) was dirty all I had to do was spray some MAF cleaner inside and let it dry and it took care of it, I also cleaned the intake manifold while I was at it. I would make sure your fuel delivery system isn't malfunctioning or leaking anywhere either.

I wouldn't think my iac would cause it as it worked before but it couldn't hurt to clean it, I'll give it a shot tomorrow and check the fuel system is good too

It seems like its something electrical, like somethings cutting the engine off. If i hold the throttle open and start it, the truck will rev higher and then die. Its not sputtering out like its being suffocated or anything. cleaned the IAC but it didnt help unfortunately

Maybe you triggered the inertia switch, or it's going bad? Could also be a finicky ground on the fuel pump, I've seen that happen in a Trans-Am before with similar results. If it's not any of those then I'm out of ideas.

Ill go check that right now, thanks for the tip
Edit: the inertia switch was in the right position, i thought maybe it had been triggered when it got towed

That was all I had, I have heard of them going bad, I don't think it's common but It might be beneficial to bypass it just to make sure, however if my history with troubleshooting today is anything to go by then that wont do anything. I did my best but if that's not it I am out of ideas, I hope somebody a little more knowledgeable than myself can help you out. Good luck.
