Engine removal on a 1990 2.9 auto 4x4

Is your 'MAP' sensor possibly a TPS? Throttle Position Sensor?(That's on the other side than the Throttle Cable bracket tho....)

What does your 'MAP' sensor look like?

I know what a TPS is. The MAP on the 88 engine is on the other side of the Plenum. It's under the cover for the throttle cables.

All I really need to know is; is that the MAP sensor in your picture that has a three wire connection coming off of the fire wall?

Do you have a pic? My '88 MAP is located where BlackBII's is from the factory.

You didn't take pictures before you started? That's the first thing I did.

Too bad I didn't see this thread sooner. I could have saved you a lot of time.

I left my upper intake on the motor, that's what I used as the lifting point...eek!

I know, I am regreting not taking pics before I started, but I did not think I would have trouble...should have known better.

So can someone varify that that is the MAP sensor hooked up on the fire wall in that picture?

The one that came on the 88 engine was bolted under the throttle cable cover on the upper manifold. I just went to the junk yard on my lunch break, and the Bronco II there with a 2.9 had a sensor and connector in the same place that the 88 engine did.

The map sensor in my pic is the same map sensor you can see here:

You can barely see it here, mounted differently:
Notcie the Wiring is diffeent from mine tho....

That's EXACTLY how my '88 Ranger is. You can also see the MAP vac routing as well..

I have not unplugged the sensor on the fire wall but I am guessing it will look just like the one you took a picture of.

Yes. The sensor is mounted on the Upper manifold just behind the throttle cable mounts on the Plenum. That is where it was mounted on the 88 engine (engine going in the truck), so I assumed that's where it was for the 90 engine (year of truck engine is going into) too. I think my whole problem is tha I am trying to figure out how to wire two map sensors when I never even un hooked the original one in the truck.

The solution is simple then. If the stock MAP is still connected, then just remove the one that wires can't reach and use the one on the firewall. Get get a new vacuum line, and re-route to the MAP on the firewall.

How do you know which terminal on the dis cap is for the #1 cylinder? I see what it says in the book but everything does not line up just like that. Can some one tell me the relation of where the #1 cylinder wire should be hooked on the dis cap, in relation to the black nub in the middle. thanks.

1987 B2 2.9L Distributor Cap Order

I scrawled this diagram of my distributor firing order under the hood. Comes in handy.

Thanks a lot man!! I'll go check it out to see how I have mine set up.

okay....I tried to crank it and it turns over but it is not firing up. When I let off of the key, it goes pop...pop...then dies, it's really not much of a sputter. Any ideas?

In the diagram posted above is that the correct order for each of the cylinder spark plug wires on a 2.9?

I'd hate to be posting a bogus order . . .
This works on my 1987 2.9L B2, given:

Passenger side of engine, front to back = cylinders 1, 2, 3
Driver's side of engine, front to back = cylinders 4, 5, 6
