As you can see by the sig below, my Ranger has 96K miles. Everything is original and the engine has been well maintained...doesn't use oil, sounds good, plenty of pep, etc. Sucks gas tho'....12 - 21 mpg at either end of the driving spectrum!

How many miles can I expect to get out of the engine?

I have 196K on my 94 XLT 4X4 and the only things I have done is;

1. Spark plugs & wires around 110K & 190K
2. Water Pump around 150K
3. Intake gaskets ( upper & lower ) at 190K

and of course oil changes every 4K.

As long as you take care of it you should have no problem for many more miles.

well i cant say much about a 4.0 but i have a 93 2.3l with 283k miles on it and the only thing i have done with it is

spark plugs at 130k and 270k

spark plug wires at 280k

timing belt at 190k

and oil at just about every 3k

and my truck still runs good its lost a little bit of power but thats normal for that many miles i need to relace some gaskets but thats about it. as for the gas mileage what your getting is normal for that engine. i only get 15-20 on the average so your actually lucky to get what you do for that size engine.

I've got 200,700 on mine (1994) and all I've had to replace were the A/C unit, Power-steering pump, and starter (all after 130,000 miles)... That engine is super strong...

1994 4.0L with 190k miles. Changed plugs and wires, starter (180k), oil regularly (synthetic), and other minor odds and ends. It doesn't use or leak any oil between oil changes...very happy with my Ranger.

130K on mine (93) Regular oil and antifreeze changes since new. I think I'm just getting a rear main seal leak.

My 93 4.0 short/short 5 speed only manages 15-21 and its not even 4wd! Its really light on options and weight too. I've kept up on all possible maintainences...It's just a relatively large engine for a compact truck thats all.--Josh

240+ K

My 4.0 had 240k and was fine until a plastic part failed and dumped the water on the freeway. It overheated, cracked a head. On teardown the motor had almost no cylinder wear, very little taper or ridge. The bearings were showing wear but everything was tight and on the loose end of tolerances. The rings were probably OK till I overheated it. Prior to that my experience had been similar to everyone else's - oil, plugs, filters, batteries, one belt.
