My 1992 Ranger 2.3 litre usually runs fine. 180,000 miles. A couple days ago, typical hot central Florida muggy summer weather (90 degrees plus likely), my ranger wouldn't start after cranking 6 times or so for 10 seconds each time. I had driven it 20 miles. Eventually it did start and worked fine since, except for a couple minutes after I restarted it as before. I drove into the highway and accelerated up to 45 or so, and it seemed to just shut off for maybe 6-10 seconds, then worked fine, and it had been working fine since. Not an empty gas tank problem.

6 months ago I replaced the plug wires, plugs and the ignition module, which fixed an engine light problem.

Didn't notice any problem today when I drove to the grocery store.

intermittent issues like that can indicate a few things, but in tank fuel pump is the first thing that comes to mind...especially with warm or hot conditions (weather wise)...but it could also be inertia switch (rarer) or the rail pump...

If you let it sit for a few minutes when this happens again, and I'm sure it will, and it starts up right away then you can suspect the pump in the tank is going south...
