so i was going to get my brother from a friend's house just now, and on the way back my truck was running great (as it's been the last day or two or whatever) and suddenly it started putterin' and studderin' and it died without starting back. it will turn like a mo mo but won't start. i'm clueless. we just put a bunch of parts in it and i've never come across this problem before.

Check to see if your fuel pump is still working and if so, check for spark next.

Sounds like a bad tfi module on the distributor.

an engine operates on the same basic triangle as fire.

It needs Air, Fuel and a source of ignition (Spark).

Since I doubt you are trying to run it in a vacuum
The problem is either fuel or fire.

Check for spark FIRST.

Check for fuel to see if the fuel pump is running not as you turn the
key on but crank for 10 seconds and then see if the fuel pumps
"time out" after you release the key.

IF the fuel pumps time out WHILE you are cranking then the computer
isn't seeing the spark

So basically check for spark FIRST because lack of fuel pump
operation isn't necissarily revealing of a fuel pump problem.

damn guys appreciate the replies. i didn't even think i had any replies on here by the way. i was simply getting on this thread to update it. today i used a little starting fluid to try and rule out the fuel pump. it didn't do anything when i used it so i ruled it out. next i bought a new coil, still no go. i put some needle nose on the coil wire (checked both ends) and had my brother crank it. i didn't see a spark on either side. the day before this happened i put a new distributor, a new cap, and new rotary button and slapped my week old ignition module on there. (a couple weeks earlier i replaced the plugs and the wires.) sooo dudes i'm pretty lost.

by the way ha i didn't check the spark first because i've already driven there four times today (on account of it's on the side of the road. which i'm sure you know is freakin' insane to work near.)

the only thing i haven't tried or heard of is the inertia switch. where and what is an inertia switch??

Inertia switch kills the fuel pump. If you can't run with starter fluid, you have another problem.

update.

i just got back from putting another ignition module on it and fiddling with it for a pretty damn good while. sometimes it would crank some times it wouldn't even do that; just depended on what i messed with or strokes of luck, i don't know. when i put my previous module on i didn't use any sealant so i just figured it blew. so i bought another and used the sealant and still nothin' ...day two.
