I have a 1998 Ford Ranger 4X4 4.0 Liter 5speed

Does anyone know what other Ford vehicles have the same electronic modules (GEM, RAP, etc) as my Ranger? Like the Explorer, F150, etc.

Thank you!

What I have done before is go to RockAuto and see what I have for the part and they list what other appilcations there are.

Thanks....please more help!!!

Thank you for your help!, but!....is there any way to do that online? Or any other resource you can think of?

Part of our problem is that we live on Maui, and we are left with small island resources. There is no RockAuto, or the equivalent of RockAuto.

Thanks!

Or can someone help me figure out how to find the RAP, WEP modules on the RockAuto website or something similar? Like the specific part numbers or serial numbers?

Thank you!

When you posted a similar question, you failed to reply to one of our most helpful Ford Technicians. Yes, he does it for a living.

We would like to know why you want/need to replace those parts.

Tell us what the truck is / is not doing.

Thanks!

Hi, Thanks for the Response....and my apologies for the lack of response last time...I handed it off to someone else who was supposed to follow thru and did not. Here's what I know (semi-dictated to me by my uncle over the phone):

When I got the truck it had a bad ground cable, I believe, and it caused high resistance. Everything was fried when I got it. And it fried some modules on the ISO network. Now, I cannot get communication with the scan tool, but at first I was able to. I first replaced the PCM and was getting communication but not now. I replaced the GEM and I understand they need to be programmed, and I have not programmed it....BUT, will that alone cause it to not communicate at all??

Scan tool won't communicate, but it did before....

If I recall correctly, your cigarette lighter shares fuse 17 in the cab fuse panel with your scan port.

Wow, this is going to be fun. I'm going to get my being a dick out of the way first.

RockAuto: RockAuto is a website, not a physical store. To get specific part number we really kinda need the truck sitting right here. You will just have to look them up by name, not number.

Ok, that was fun, now down to business:

A PCM should not stop communicating after replacement. If your scanner is powering up off the diagnostic connector you probably got a bad computer. If you still have it, throw the original back in and try again.

The GEM is pretty specific to the Ranger. I have seen Explorer ones plugged into Rangers and Sport Tracs but things like electronic 4x4 and stuff tend to not work correctly or consistently and the module is constantly pissed off about not being able to find the rear wiper circuit.

You are supposed to program the GEM, but in a 98, in theory you should be able to take one out of another truck with identical options (PWL, radio, fog lights, RKE, etc) and have it work properly without being programmed.

The thing about GEMs is that they are responsible for so many things, unless all your lights, your windows, your radio, pretty much anything electronic in the cab is out I doubt it was genuinely fried.

RAP depends on GEM, so if the GEM is cooked, you gotta get that going before you worry about the RAP system.

The other big thing is that if you think you had a systemic wiring issue that may have done damage, you have to be 100% sure that is fixed before plugging new parts in or they will just fry right away.
