is there a write up on this subject i searched the tech articles and a little in 4wd systems...i want pics, suggestions, part numbers for all the "little things your gonna need to avoid running to the parts store and salvage yard 100x in a hour" im thinkin its get transfer case and linkage cut a hole in the floor bolt it in and rock and roll:headbang:

1995 ford ranger supercab 3.0L 4x4 borg warner 1354 electric t-case with a weak shift motor or transfer case is on its way out (grinding after 4hi or 4low disengaged - pops out of 4low randomly very scary noises):icon_thumby:

If you have a manual you don't need the floor plate, just the bezel. Take the old single stick bezel out, lay the new one down and trace it with a sharpie, then cut the carpet along the line, lay it down again, trace the inside, and cut the plate with a dremel and disk.

I have a electric transfer case, I love this because I was used to push button vac controlled. So I think that this is the best thing, for what reason would you want to switch to manual case? Beside the lack of failure is there another reason?? Thanks

Do you really need another reason?

Lets think this through step by step.

Using an electric transfer case

1) Push button

2) Wait

3) Pray nothing in the control system has crapped out since you tried to use it last

If you want low range

4) stop

5) place trans in N

6) Keep foot on the brake

7) Push another button.

8) Pray some more.

And then, after all that, if you are really lucky you might get some 4x4.

Using a manual transfer case

1) Pull stick.

If you want low range

2) Slow to 3-5 mph

3) Pull stick again.

The manual one sounds like a metric f*ck ton less work to use and it doesn't break half as often.

Ok so what's the cost on the swap

Nope, current or future failure of the electric 4x4 system is pretty much the only reason people change to manual 4x4.

Generally less than paying for diag and repair.

I can get a good used manual case and all the needed parts at the junk yard for around $175. If the control module craps out parts alone is $300, that's no diag time, no labor.

Last time I did a manual t-case swap on something that was electric it cost me $25 for the bezel and I think I had all the rest of the parts sitting around from when I upgraded my Ranger to a 1354 case.

Glad I read this as I couldn't figure out what was wrong with the TC in the newest ranger I bought....first time I've dealt with electric TC. I don't know about the praying part tho I can curse pretty bad:thefinger:

Well I guess that sums it up lol. As of now all systems are go, until then I don't plan on changing anything. However if or when it happens guess I will be going manual. I assume that the shifter is on the floor? I have a five speed what kind of mods are needed in that department?

Read adsm08's first post above.................

My '94 auto hubs and electric shift are still going strong, 300k

I don't have a bezel, and having a hard time of finding one.... Do you by chance have one on hand that could be traced?
