I have an 89 2.9L and in a recent 4x4 trip my fan and fan shround were totalled. now i'm not sure if i should install an electric fan or go back to the stock configuration. for the new fan clutch alone it was 125 bucks i would grab a shroud from a JY but how much is the new factory fan? and how much is the average electric fan kit with a temp sensor?
i'm looking to build it really cheap but i want at least decent reliability.

With my Taurus 3.8L electric fan and the SPAL controller setup i had on my Ranger, I had about $130 in it.

I measured the stock plastic fan on my '92 Ranger to be approx. 18". I found an electric Perma-Cool unit in Summit that is 18" and I will combine it with the Painless relay and thermostat kit. I am in the process of replacing my radiator as well, since it can no longer keep my 3.0L cool in 70* weather.

$125 for a fan clutch? Does that count the gold plating?

That's a factor of 3-4 too high.

You aren't buying parts at the dealer, are you?

The fan and shroud can be found at the junkyard.

I've had both and still prefer the clutch fan. No extra strain on the alternator, and no helicopter noise when the damn thing turned on.

i love the helicopter noise. i'll just tell the ppl that stare that its a radial engine swap.

I just bought a new fan clutch for my 4.0L Explorer. It was $20.

Then I decided to go with an electic fan after all. I paid $70 for a fan, and about $25 for the thermostat electronics.

An electric fan is not going to cool nearly as well as a mechanical, so I upgraded to a 2-core aluminum radiator.

I keep the mechanical fan onboard, in case of a failure with the electric. The only reason to run an electric fan is if you frequently run through deep mud and water.

Im working on putting a 3.0 Taurus 2-speed fan in my 2.9.
Same fan as a 3.8...

But unlike everywhere I read on the web Im going to try and use the Ford IRCM/CCRM
To control it

I just made an upper hose adaptor to mount the senders ( low speed/high speed and a gauge sender along with a ground wire.

Chopped the top and bottom off the Taurus fan so it will be centered on the radiator.

Guess I should have said the sides ... but the fan gets turned 90 degrees.
