im kind of new to the whole swaping in an electric fan into something and the only one i have done just had a switch to turn it on and off. is there anything that will turn on and off the fan when its at the right temp?

Yes. There are adjustable thermostats that you can buy and install. I personally like the Hayden thermostats. I've used them on a lot of cars and trucks and they work well. They also come with a wire to go to the A/C compressor, and turn on the fan when the A/C is running.

The one I did wired to the a/c system as well as a thermal switch that you install into a free port in the coolant system on the block.

Worked like a charm. It was a painless wiring package with a 19" fan. I hardly ever heard it come on with typical driving.

where did you get yours from?

check Orielly's They have a 14 inch hayden fan for ~65.00 and all the wiring (thermostat w/ A/C override) for ~30.00 so for under 100 bucks it can be done.

you need to pay attention to the amount of air they move, cfm, and mounting the fan to get the most air through the radiator.

Is the temp gauge on these trucks a real gauge? or is it more of an idiot light disguised as a gauge?

I know on some cars (ie; Miata's - the guages are all idiot lights cleverly disguised as gauges...they don't actually tell you moderate changes in oil pressure, coolant temp etc...)

The reason I ask is, My ranger's coolant gauge stays in the bottom 1/2 of the range all the time. leads me to believe its not a real gauge...but if it is a real gauge, that leads me to believe that even a fairly low flowing fan will do the job....

It is a real gauge, the sender is just a piece of crap (which is why they cost $4). I accepted the fact that mine was not working for life and decided for $4 to change the sender for giggles, and it did make everything start working. No longer was warm just inside the normal line, now it went all the way to where you'd expect it to be (around the O-R).
