so fuel must not be the issue...or at least not the only issue. popping and snorting usually means the timing is off.

howd you end up with a rag in your intake? :D

maybe your chain jumped a tooth. it wouldnt hurt to check base timing just to be sure.
 
Just curious, could water have contaminated my fuel again from condensation? It was a cold night and a relatively warm morning the other day....
My fuel tank only had a quarter of a tank as well
 
no. it takes a lot longer than that for enough water to cause a problem to condensate in the tank (months, at the least).

you should be able to start and run the truck at idle on starting fluid alone. so if it wont start and idle while you spray spurts of starting fluid into the TB, then you are either not using enough or you have a spark issue.

My 2.9 will not start at all on starting fluid. I found this out when I had a bad fuel pump. It will sputter a little, but that's it...doesn't seem to matter how much you use either.

I still cannot believe how it got in there, it drove great while it was in there!

That's what my truck does. What I don't understand is how I have good fuel pressure. :icon_confused:
 
it'll start.

any small displacement engine will start and run on starting fluid.

at the napa i worked at, the PCM stopped firing the injectors for some unknown reason on our '88 2.3 truck. we tinkered on it for a week and couldnt figure out what the problem was so we decided to drop it off at one of our regular customers' shop who offered to go over it with a fine toothed comb. it was just a few blocks so rather than towing it, i sat in the core support and fed the engine with starting fluid while shawn drove. worked quite well :D

(note: dont try that at home :icon_thumby:)

did you ever get around to pulling your injectors and seing if they are clogged? what about checking the injector harnesses with a light to be sure they are getting a good ground signal from the PCM?

No I haven't gotten around to pulling them. I don't have a light.
 
you can buy a node light for cheap at most auto parts stores. it plugs right into the injector plug and will flash on/off if the injector is getting power.

you could probably even use a regular old 12v test light.
