EEC-IV Code Help

I don't even have a test light anymore....can't find it.

Not really related, but while going down the road, I saw a Ranger at a sh**hole car lot with the same color, same year, same tranny, and same old 2.9L. Only difference is a bigger canopy and it is an extended cab! They want $2650 (Way to damn much!) but I called and the guy said they could do $2200. Is this too much?

not if its plated with gold.

you could get a decently equipped gen3 truck for that price.

i wouldnt pay more than $1500 for a gen1 in very good condition.

Ok. I wonder if he will go that low. I really like the gen 1 body style. Don't know what I would do with my truck though :(

so fuel must not be the issue...or at least not the only issue. popping and snorting usually means the timing is off.

Yes, I have determined timing is FUBAR'ed! Pulled all plugs and were just soaked in gas, and spark was good. Have compression, fuel, and spark so it must be timing. How do you adjust timing on a non running engine?

pull the spout connector and crank the engine over. adjust to 10 degrees BTDC.

The spout is just a two pin connector with a cover on it right? Well anyways, gonna have to wait on that, gotta have someone come over with a timing light when it stops snowing over here. We got 4 inches of snow and more is expected throughout the week. The snow we have won't melt off either as it will be in the 20's all week!

yep, the spout is actually a jumper. it should be located somewhere near the TFI module (which should be located on the distributor itself on a 2.9, if i recall...). dont try to time the engine with the spout still plugged in...it wont work :icon_thumby:

OK will do. I will keep you updated on what happens. Thanks

OK a quick update, I bought a code reader for the truck (I know I can do it with a paper clip but wanted results I'm not guessing on.) But since I cannot start the truck, are the codes relevant? The codes are 21 and 24 on the KOEO and 22 on continuous. The manual says each of the codes mean...
21- Cooling Temperature sensor out of specified range or ECT out of range.
24- Intake Air Charge Temperature (ACT,IAT) or Vane Air Temperature (VAT) sensor out of range.
22- MAP or BARO sensor out of range.

Thanks in advance

the code 21 might not matter, since your supposed to do self tests with the engine up to operating temp.

since 22 is a continuous memory code, it probably isnt telling us much (might have to do with the rag in the intake).

and i dont see a bad IAT causing a no-start....but you could try starting the truck with it unplugged just to be sure.

OK thanks Wicked, I was kinda thinking that those would not be relevant. I still haven't had a chance to check timing due to this crappy weather we've been experiencing, so will do that as soon as possible.

A quick update
The truck almost started with the ACT unplugged. It fired about 3 times and then it was back to the normal no fire situation. I have no idea if it is related to the sensor being unplugged or not. Well anyways, I took the sensor off and am going to test it. I read somewhere how to test it and I figure it is worth a shot. Is it possible that it is starving for fuel or flooding with too much? I have about 3 gallons in the rear tank and am parked on a hill. Thanks
