Ecu

I read it as putting a 4.0 engine in the truck leaving the 3.0 transmission.
After going back over it again I'm not certain what is in the mix. I think it's to be found in the first 4 post tho, if you can decifer em

Yes, as said a 3.0l transmission won't bolt to any 4.0l engine
But an automatics bell housing can be swapped
So there is a bt of confusion about this that needs to be clarified, hopefully you can explain how this was done

Automatic shifting is done based on speed, shift points
2001 Ranger computer would have used the OSS on the 2001 automatic for speed signal
2000 Ranger computer would have used the GEM and VSS on rear axle for speed
These are different signals, not compatible

I assume speedometer is not working in the 2001 Ranger????

So no shifting, well, as said 1 shift maybe because of higher RPM
2000 computer needs an accurate speed signal to shift transmission at the right times
2001 GEM won't have that ability and 2000 GEM won't be compatible with 2001 cab wiring

The 2001 base chassis wiring is the main issue for this problem, not the trans or the engine
Much like the change in fuel pressure between 1997/1998 there was a speed signal change in 2000/2001

You need a speed signal the 2000 computer can use for shifting, and speedo/odo, and cruise if so equipped
The easiest, although not easy, would be to use a Dakota Digital SGI-100BT
Not cheap but can use the rear axle ABS VSS signal and convert it to 8,000ppm signal the computer needs, and speedo, and cruise

I was in a hurry at pick a part and grabbed an ecu off of a 4.0. Later realized it was the wrong year by far

So i have a 2000 4.0 engine in a 2001 3.0 ranger. Kept 3.0 trans. But used the 4.0 trans bell housing so they would bolt up. Obviously still need the 2000 4.0 computer, but after that, what did you say i need to do for the trans to work? All wise and powerful ranger knowledge man.

And correct, speedo doesnt work. Also is OSS- onboard speed signal? And what is GEM? After getting this far i would hate to think i screwed up past the point of no return. And im sure you are surprised as i am after splicing all those wires that i was able to start and drive it. On the first start attempt, i might add

I was in a hurry at pick a part and grabbed an ecu off of a 4.0. Later realized it was the wrong year by far
I believe the one I go to would let you exchange it for the right year, if available. Possibly depending on who is at the desk. They have adopted newer policies that are more into pricing everything. So like at the one I go to it would depend on if you bought the warranty or whatever

GEM is the Body Computer used in Rangers from 1995 thru 2003
It runs the wipers, cab lights, "door ajar", power locks and window functions, and a few other things(4WD for instance)
AND
In 1998-2000 Rangers it also did speed signal conversion
Its located on drivers side of radio in the central dash, have to pull radio to see it
If all the other functions work except speed then the SGI-100BT would be your best option, to get speed signal back for speedo/odo, computer(auto shifting) and cruise, if so equipped

What's the first 4 "digits" of new engine computer's part number, that will tell you the YEAR of the vehicle it was in
First 2 or 3 digits is the year
F0 to F8 = 1990-1998
XL5 = 1999
YL5 = 2000
1L5 to 9L5 = 2001-2009

1L5 and up would be for 4.0l SOHC engine only so not what you want

And what did you do about PATS(passive anti-theft system)?
1999 and up engine computers needed PATS "key test" to "boot up" fully

Oh, output shaft sensor. And generic electronic module

About the PATS, i wired a push button start straight to the sarter

About the PATS, i wired a push button start straight to the sarter

Yes, easy to do that but that wouldn't work to get engine to run, PATS disables fuel injectors as its main theft deterrent
Starter motor and fuel pump disable are easy to by-pass can't by-pass fuel injectors not working, need a working computer to do that
So there has to be more to that story, 100% for sure

If you got a 1998 4.0l OHV computer then it wouldn't have PATS, so adding a push button start would work, but you could just ground the starter relay and use the key to start

Could i not run a wire from the rear axle to the appropriate pin in the PCM to get signal?

The rear axle ABS(VSS) sensor sends out 25,000ppm(pulses per mile)
The speedometer, computer and cruise are calibrated for 8,000ppm, Ford standard since mid-1980's

The GEM module in 1998-2000 did this "down conversion" from 25k to 8k
The SGI-100BT can also do this "down conversion"

There is another option, 1986 thru 1997 Rangers used a regular speedometer gear with VSS on the transmission tailshaft, or transfercase output shaft
On 2WD automatics the DRIVE gear is machined onto the output shaft just not used after 1997
So you could get a 1995-1997 tail shaft housing that has the hole and the hold down for speedo gear/VSS setup and uses that directly to cluster/speedo and computer, cruise, as it outputs the Ford Standard 8,000ppm

Unit looks like this: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/images/speedsensor.gif
Has speedo cable hookup, not used, and VSS 2 wire sensor

Looks like this with DRIVEN gear attached: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/images/speed/vss_withgear.JPG

Tail shaft housing just slides off, I would replace rear main seal
Your current housing should have the cast hole but never drilled out, and the flat area next to it for a threaded hold down bolt
So you might be able to machine it to accept the VSS/gear setup

I switched motors, bell housing, hard wired starter. And ive drove it quite a bit. Even though i can only go 45mph
