Hey bros,
Just got me a 93 ranger, 4.0, 2wd, 5 spd.

120k miles, FOR 1500 BUCKS! :yahoo:

It runs fantastic, looks great, I am absolutely in love with it. I previously owned a 96 explorer 4.0 ohv which was my trusty daily. RIP (rolled 3 times off the side of the road) :owned:

I'm new to the m50d-r1. My exploder was auto.

So the catch with my new baby is the tranny whines in 1st-3rd, and back again in 5th. Obviously bearings in the trans will need to be replaced. My question is, should i check a junkyard around me for one and just rebuild it? Problem is, I don't have a hydraulic press to get the bearings off the shafts.

ANY IDEARS?? :icon_cheers:

welcome to the site i don't know a whole lot about the tranny's I'm sure someone will post something about it soon

Welcome to TRS~

I've owned an 88 Ranger with the original m5od tranny and it has about 400,000 km on it...still seems solid...

You might try replacing the tranny fluid...maybe check it to see if it's low...easy enough to do...just remove the top plug and stick in a yellow zip tie (yellow because it shows the level clearly)...only problem may be that it's hard to check due to the angle of the hole...but minor aggravation at that...

If the level is low it might explain the whine...but there is a certain amount of noise in them anyway...guess it depends on how whiny it is...

I've put some TransMedic in mine years ago...and then changed the fluid (easy to do if you pull the thing and tilt it backwards...it just drains out)...otherwise, there is a lower plug that you can remove to drain the tranny...fill it up and test it...you can always reuse the same stuff if you keep it clean should you need to rebuild it at some point...

I know that some people don't put much faith in things like TransMedic, but not sure if mine would have lasted so long without some care...the R1 is supposed to be a better tranny than the original...so unusual that you're having problems on one with low mileage...
