I read someplace that there has been a number of ECM software updates (9 or 10) issued for the 2002 Ranger. I do understand that not all of them would apply to every truck since they are VIN specific. Since my truck has never been in a dealer’s shop, I doubt that any have been accomplished.

So, first question, is there any reason I should have the software updated? Second, any idea what it costs to have it done?

Thanks, Ed

Well, usually software updates are issued to solve issues with the way the engine runs or the trans shifts.

If you have no issues with the way it runs or shifts then it probably wouldn't help anything to update the software, but it probably won't hurt anything if you do. I update the wife's car every so often just because I have the access.

I don't know about anyone else, but we charge one hour's labor to update the PCM, but we will usually do it for free when doing large repairs like deep engine work or power train assembly replacement. Like I said, if you aren't having problems, I wouldn't bother.
