OK guys I am a true blue Ford guy. I have an 89 GT that I have rebuilt. I have a 67 Ford F100. AND i have this 2001 ranger extended cab. Straight to the point. The truck runs great until it reaches 3400 RPM. It wants to die out and buck like a wild mustang through to 4100 and then smooths out. I took it to Ford and they cant find anything wrong with it. I have replaced the following chasing this gremlin cam shaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, iac valve, plugs, wires, Coil pack, battery. Ford said he found water at the plug to the computer, he put dielectric grease in the area and it seemed to help a couple of weeks. I would rather this thing be all the time instead of intermitant so i could figure it out.

Any idea would be helpful. Has anyone out there come across this before.

This is a new one on me, but i would double check that connection.

Are there any grounds in the third brake light area. i have noticed i have a leak there. could this afect the computer?

Gotta be it

The syncroshaft on what would be the distributor has to be the issue. It is the only thing I have not changed yet. Ford days its 142 bucks. Gonna have to wait to payday.

There is a TSB to determine Syncro, see if you can get details from local Ford shop. I know it messures the EGR output signal, if you have the equipment to test you could determine if it is it before spending the $$............

You said you changed the cam shaft sensor, did you only change the magnetic pickup?

Either way, I doubt teh synchro is the problem. You'd have other issues such as squeeling, CEL, and it would do it on high revs, not just certain revs.

Replaced your fuel filter recently?

Yup, Fuel filter, coil pack, plugs, wires, cam sensor, crank sensor, iac, cleaned the intake area, tha mass air sensor, installed new belt, water pump, front seal I am telling ya i have been chasing the gremlin pretty hard. Really the only thing left is this syncro thing. Talked to ford dealer and he seemed dumbfounded. I even paid for that high dollar injector service at the dealership to no avail. Spent a bunch of money on this one.

It def sounds like a camshaft synchronizer. Had a few cases of this at work and they turned out to be a cam synchro.

1. Unplug the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor before starting the vehicle, then road test it for the symptom.
2. If the problem is gone with the CMP sensor disconnected, it is likely that the CMP synchronizer is the cause of the problem.

Why would it function fine at one rpm, then malfunction, and THEN function again???

idk why it would do that but that's just what my experience and resources lead me to believe. 'm not saying that it is the synchro for sure, I want him to do the quick test before he throws money into it.

Thank you

Don't know what the test is, but an easy way to trouble shoot the shaft would be to disconnect the plug from the magnetic pickup and road test it. :icon_thumby:

I agree with you. The reason I ask is that it doesn't seem logical to me. My 93 does the same thing sometimes, studder, but additional throttle smooths it out. Usually only happens when it is cold though.
