Now I've done it! After first teaching oldest grandson to drive a stick (many stallouts and abrupt starts) then burying it in a knee deep mud puddle, I have the balancer at the front of the drive shaft (near tranny) is no longer attached to the driveshaft but rather is most of the time sitting on the tranny extension and sometimes falling back onto the drive shaft causing a ruckus for a few moments and stopping again (I'm guessing coming to rest back onto the trans extension again) can this be fixed or only replaced?

My old BMW has a similar set up. When they go, they get cut off and the bimmer soldiers on just fine.:D

There is no repairing that part in the field. The outer ring is attached to the inner by a rubber section that gets poured in a cast like a babbit. I would drop the shaft, ditch the separated section, and see how she rides. If it's yucky get it to a driveline shop for balancing.

The only repair is to replace the forward yoke.

a cheap method to rebalance the drive shaft in your garage, ( though not the proper way, but cheaper than taking it to a shop) is to use a bunch of hose clamps that are big enough to fit around the shaft, space them out and with truck on jack stands, NO TIRES ON THE GROUND, see how it looks and sounds and adjust as desired. otherwise take it into a shop and get it look at professionaly.

truck on jack stands and in gear?????? where have I seen something like that?

ferris buellers day off.:icon_rofl: just don't get in front of it.

It shouldn't be that much to get a shop to balance it.

Thanks for the input everyone. Have an Explorer axle to replace my dying 7.5. It needs some work before installation though. In the mean time if there are no noticeable vibrations, would it ok to just remove the balancing ring and use it that way? Don't want to have to replace tranny also.
