I know that 4 gear and 6 gear planetaries can be swapped between 1354 cases both electric shift and manual as well as the main shaft, but I am planning on making a doubler from an old 1350 case and I wanted to get a head start on the shaft.

So heres the question, I have a main shaft from an old 1354M case that I twisted the output off of, will the sun gear and slip yoke fit in the 1350 planetary so I can use it for half of my doubler shaft?

Better way to ask the question, would be.... Are 1350 and 1354 planetaries interchangeable?

I havnt picked up a 1350 case yet, but I want to have the shaft ready to go when I do pick one up.

I recall the first few years of 1354s had 1350 planetary gears in them (these are the 4-planet ones), so I'm sure you could go the other way 'round with it, but I've never actually tried it. I would think the entire planetary assembly would have to be swapped as a whole however, as some of the parts (shift collar, fork, etc.) are different.

I had a 4 planetary 1354M that I swapped in, but the output shaft broke right where the nut holds the flange on in the rear. I pulled the shaft out of my 1354E and it was the exact same, and while I was in there I swapped in the 6 gear planetary. An I also had to swap the shaft fork because the newer fork slips over a disc and the older one the fork fit in a groove on the shift collar (if that makes sense to you).

I just wasnt sure if the 1354 and 1350 parts were interchangeable. I dont understand what the diff is between a fixed yoke 1350 and a 4 gear planetary 1354 is though.:dunno:

Oh well its worth a shot.

Junkie's right. The planetary gears, the fork, the shift collar all must match. The front plate has to be the same too, some of them used a different O.D. input shaft. This may be only different on very old 13-50s with the standard threaded bolt holes, not on the later 13-50 with the metric bolt holes. It getting tough remembering all this useless info in my old age, I havent built a 13-50 or 54 in about 6 years. I really need to dig out my old note book with all the different casting numbers and what matches/ what doesnt and post them all here.

The differences are:
The length of the front snout.
The front output shaft has a u-joint (inside the case).
The shift lever is about 1/4" longer on the 13-54 (the case is also 1/4" thicker where the shift lever comes through.)

As far as strength difference: not much, if any at all.

Okay. Im going to go ahead and look for a 1350 and wait to make the shaft until I have the case apart.

Picked up my 1350 today. It just hit me today that the fuel tank may be in the way. Does anybody know if the tank will clear the tcase on a Gen III super cab? Im up at school about 2hrs away from my truck, so I cant run out and check.

I have a second battery and an air tank where the spare tire used to be, so I cant really get a rear tank. I was thinking of getting a tank for a short bed reg cab truck since the dont really extend under the cab. I would have to fill up every 160 miles lol, but thats a sacrifice im willing to make for a crawl box.

I dont think there will be room with the stock tank. The reg cab tank should work out right.

I tore down the 1350 today. It turns out the only difference between the planteries in a 1350 and 4 gear 1354 is the outer diameter of the yoke the receives the transmission output shaft. The 1350 has a much larger OD and uses a larger seal. The section of shaft that slips into the planetary and needs to be mated to the trans shaft for the doubler is the same across the board. You can us a shaft from a 1354 E or M or a 1350 E or M.

Thats what i was trying to say, but i couldnt remember if it was the 13-50, 13-54 (4-gear), or the 13-54 (6-gear) that was different.

I picked up a Reg cab short bed fuel tank today for 25 bucks, so I will see if its going to work. I think it should since the frame is basically the same from the cab back, but I wont know until I try.

on my gen II supercab I could fit the doubler assembly and keep my stock gas tank If I shaved a little material off of the housing on the rear case and cut the gas tank skidplate, and still then it would be real tight fit.

I didnt want to go that route so I found a BII tank that will work. The reserve ranger tank should fit fine under the bed if you move your battery and air tank.

Im going to try the reg cab tank first.
