Building a 1350/1354 doubler- any wisdom to share?


Slammer, can you get me some info on how you did that sight tube?

You can see where the sight tube is mounted in relation to the fill/drain holes - fill hole on left. the top of the sight tube should to be above the fill hole - the consensus for most doubler users is to fill the unit up to the vent hole on the front of the case, which puts the level above the D&D fill hole.

I forget what the fittings are called, I just went to the hardware store and asked for some fittings that I could attach clear tubing to, they need to be 90deg fittings of course, and have the little ferules to attatch the tubing without crushing it. The tubing I used was 1/4" (1/8" ID), you could get fittings for bigger tubing which would read easier, but not really needed.

It was pretty simple to install, just drilled the holes and used a 1/8" npt pipe thread tap and used teflon tape on the threads.
 
I got to thinking, if your doing a DIY doubler, you may have more or less space between the two cases as my D&D kit did, so not sure how the sight tube would work in your case. Most DIY doublers i've seen are longer so should be no problem.

just got a call from him yesterday and there boxed and ready for shipping
not sure what bray d means about him being shady
after talking to him yesterday and
considering he's a one man operation designing machining shipping orders etc
The way i did it was sent him an email through his ebay site and waited patiently
did i mention i waited patiently

i'll post up when i get the product
i don't expect it to take too long but then i don't care how long it takes
i'm not in any hurry

Those would be compression fittings, the screw on nut compresses the inner double beveled collar around the tubing. I used a bunch for my onboard air stuff that goes to an air horn that I no longer have (was fun while it lasted tho). They are re-usable if you need to take things apart "as long as" you don't take the collar off of the tubing.


Awesome little idea I might do a huge one with one inch tube for my gas tank lol :icon_twisted:
 
WOW, holy thread resurrection. yeah, I just saw on Pirate 4x4 that someone had ordered a doubler from DD, good to see he's back in the 1350 doubler biz.

yeah compression fittings, I've seen those on gas tanks also, good idea.

Sounds like you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Guy says he has kits ready to ship yet its nearly IMPOSSIBLE to contact him through phone (I eventually got through after MANY attempts), and if you email him it takes forever to get a response (as you said yourself).

I understand he's a machinist, but that's no excuse for the lack of response to potential customers. I would AT LEAST be checking/replying to emails daily. Communication is key for a successful 'business'.
 
i managed to get one last month. not going to say he was easy to get a hold of but i kept trying. once i did it was here in less than a week. nice kit.

Ive been told that you can mate either a 1350/1350 1350/1354 and a1354/1354 version of the doubler. Is this true? and are there any advantages to using any particular set of cases over another? I have a pair of 1350s that I would like to use.

you can use either 1350 or 1354 for the doubler, or any combo.
I believe the 1354 is just slightly longer than the 1350.
It just has to be a manual shift 1350/1354 for the doubler
later model ('94+) 1354's are a little stronger due to a six gear planetary and a better shifting setup, but the early ones have the same 4-gear planetary as the 1350's
two 1350's would work fine
where in Crawlorado are you at, I'm in Salida
 
Ill have to source another manual case then. suppose Ill look for the later model 1354. Im in Denver.:icon_cheers:

I'm pretty sure this is what you meant but I just thought I'd clarify. The FRONT case (doubler case) has to be manual shift. The rear case (t-case) can be either manual or electric shift.
 
This is one helpful forum! I'm thinking about ordering the DD kit myself, bit I'm a little leafy of doing the install as I've never had a T-case apart before at all let alone completely understandhow they work... I've got an 88 B2 with the electric case. What exactly will I need for this build? Is it the kind of project a guy with no experience can tackle? Hate to waste $500+ bucks on something I can't do! Any help is greatly appreciated.
