Anyone watch the new Doomsday Preppers show last night?

I watched a few minutes before turning it. I think it's all an over exaggeration. If the world does end, which I don't think it will, then they might last for a while assuming no one kills them. I don't know, I guess that's my opinion so no bashing please

I watched it too.Not everyone will agree with me on this, but its not an opinion, its what the Bible says about the last days.Im far from perfect but do believe what the Bible says. So,ya,i could see something like that happening, when,i dont know, could be soon,or not even in our life time.I probably sturred up a stink now, thats just me,so believe what you like, and we will see what the future brings.

IMO unless your end of the world preperations include a spaceship to get to that new possibly hospitable planet a meager 22 light years away they found last week you will be planetless... so it really doesn't matter.

To me the end of the world means there is no more world, if not physically hostpitably. Game over, the end, no more, last one out get the lights... No MRE or ammo stash will fix that.

Anyone notice the small windmill that was made out of an alternator to generate power?

I DVR'd it. Will get around to watching it one of these days.

Steve

Small windmill made out of a generator you say... Not a bad idea... Though you would need gearing to make it spin fast enough to produce any real charge... Wind turbines (windmills) don't spin at even 60 rpm, iirc... Alternators are made to idle at around 700 crank rpm an my best guess based on pulley size, the alternator at idle probably spins around 1500rpm so mid range rpm where it is optimal, maybe 6000rpm? So you would need like a 15:1 gear set to make the alternator produce a reasonable charge at average wind speeds

People used to run wells with the old timey windmills, I wondered about rigging up a generator to one since most are either being scrapped or pushed in a ditch with a dozer. Never actually sat and counted but they spin a lot faster than the big ones.

My opinion.

Yes. It was nice to see self-efficient groups of people still exist. I don't think the way they were living was too much different than our ancestors. That's just a guess though.

I think the program had a issue with the "Expert analysis" at the end of each segment. The "Expert" seemed one-sided and UN-educated.

As far the Preppers themselves go, well everyone has different shades of paranoia. But I think most doomsday scenarios involve staying mobile, all others would be extinction level events where you just need to go out and party :icon_cheers:.

I'm interested in the show. You never know what you might learn from a show like that.

Agree 100%. In general Preppers seem like educated, smart people. So you're gonna learn something watching.

I watched the show. Each three had different reasons for prepping. They seem educated how? The fact that they know how to can? what plants to eat? If you mean the poles shifting(north & south) and land masses moving, really?2) Walking out of a massive earthquake with a bottle of salad dressing and a bag full of knives?3) Walking 12 miles to your truck and driving 325 miles to Mexico? Mexico!? Really? Yea, that country is the place to escape to. all because of mid-east oil not being available. We only buy 20% from the middle east.Yes the price would go up for gas but not cause the total collapse of the U.S.I did not watch the second show.

I should have made it a little more clear in my first post, my thought is the world will end someday. I don't think it will end in 2012, it could , or maybe in 2013? I guess what I'm saying is you don't know when and I guess it would be bad to be prepared, I just think that these shows are stirring the pot. And if something does happen in 2012 I think it will be from humans, not something cataclismic.
Don't think I'm arguing with you, that's not my intention

Since the people that live there now want out of there on a good day... it might be pretty well vacated on a bad day. :icon_idea:

Ok I missed some of that stuff. But knowing what plants to eat and how to can, yes that is a very good attribute to have.

And I agree with you. Mexico is a bad place for anything, including a vacation.

Barring mass stupidity. I don't think the world is going to end anytime soon.
