Doomsday Preppers

I admire people that are self-reliant.We all should be.Preparing for a disaster is a good idea.I guess my problem with people is that their reasons don't seem to be rooted in logical thought.Knowledge is a very powerful tool, become informed about the real possibilities. The only thing that can be predicted is that things will be un-predictable.I personally don't feel that society will collapse into kaos in the blink of an eye.If I am wrong all your planning will probably be for nothing.Improvise,Overcome, and Adapt. That's my motto.

I know a guy that rebuilds ceiling fans, and makes them permanent magnet generators. He uses them to run battery chargers, ect. He also rebuilds cordless tool batteries, to use well beyond their life expectancy.

I think the majority of end of the world scenarious may be overblown, but it is very clear to me that we are in an economic desaster, that is about to get ugly. As a nation, we are not self sustaining, and too user oriented. Millions are losing jobs, homes and the ability to make ends meet. Many thru no fault of their own.

It really wouldn't take very much to push us (as a nation),over the edge right now.
I admire anyone who is trying to develope self sufficiency, whether it is repairing/ building their own vehicles, like we do here, or raising there own uncontaminated foods.ect.

Do some research and check out our last great depression. Our jobless rate as a nation is VERY comparrable to that, and we are only being held up as a nation, by false credit.

Our national infrastructure has many weak spots that any ONE could trigger a calamitty.

I live in pretty much the center of OKLAhoma, which is about center of the US. We have earthqukes, tornados, straight line winds, ice storms, droughts/100+ deg temps, major thunderstorms, lighting storms, and lots of low paying jobs. The power goes out at my place so regularly I don't bother resetting any of the digital clocks in the house.

The job market SUCKS for anyone needing more than $9-$10 an hour, OR has to drive 30-50 miles one way to work. Housing prices are lower than most of the nation, but so is overall pay. Your resume doesn't mean spit to most employers.
I am highly skilled and unimployed. Employers for low paying jobs are intimidated by me and won't hire. At all. Higher paying jobs get thousands of applicants, and need only one.

I am not alone. There are thousands like me all over the area, and the country. We gave all of our jobs to other countries. We passed laws like the "right to work" laws, that had sneaky little clauses in them that allow employers to drop their paying wages dramatically.

I should have made it a little more clear in my first post, my thought is the world will end someday. I don't think it will end in 2012, it could , or maybe in 2013? I guess what I'm saying is you don't know when and I guess it would be bad to be prepared, I just think that these shows are stirring the pot. And if something does happen in 2012 I think it will be from humans, not something cataclismic.
Don't think I'm arguing with you, that's not my intention

Remember what it says in the bible as well, Mark 13:32 - "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

Ignorance is bliss my friend, I don't want to know - It gives you time to think of all the things that don't matter like Money, cars and bills. But unfortunately it gives you time to think about what does matter and that you are going to watch die or know that they will not go on living. As a father of a 8 year old son and an 11 year old daughter, I do not want to know and I don't want them to know.

I watched the very first episode of it awhile back before it became a series. I havent been able to watch it lately since I dont get Nation Geographic here. I thought it was a pretty good show. Maybe a little more dramatic and such than needed. The "survival mom" lady on the first episode ordered a bunch of food (pallets of it) and had it delivered by semi in the middle of the night for OPSEC. On a survival forum she is on though she said that was the producers doing though.

no ones yet realized that every day you wake up is another day closer to the suns ultimate goal to destroy the earth with supernova and that is the inconvenient truth folks.

hopefully global warming will superheat the earth and we will be able to kill the sun with our own supernova before it kills us.

I just helped some friends move, I move close to a years worth of can goods. It was ridiculous. If it happens, it happens.

Lol I helped a friends parents move and the father is convinced he needs a rotating dry stock of food for when the gov't falls. So I helped him move a couple shelves of dry and canned goods also.

Sent from the road while ignoring traffic

people are dumb, canned goods expire

"non perishable" my ass

Head west!!! Our newspaper is FULL of jobs paying double to tripple your$9-$10hrs.

If you live in the "Oil Patch" and dont have a job, your an idiot...... Swallow your pride, and come out to the patch, its fun just to sit and watch the morons sometimes.

I saw the show, I liked it enough to keep watching it. But it's a bummer because it's a little vague on specifics like how to can, or how to make the windmill generator. Then there's the poor guy on the last episode I saw who blew his thumb half off. I'm sorry the only malfunction he had was a BRAIN malfunction if indeed he put his finger over the muzzle of a loaded gun as they said, jammed or not..... I don't remember what he was shooting but I sort of thought at first it was a revolver and he had his thumb across the cylinder when he fired but that still user error.

50yrs ago heck even 20 when I was a kid everybody was a "prepper" I remember having to help my family take care of the farm every single year. We had an entire house on the farm that was FULL of food from the crops. Canned everything stocked up in every room, entire basement was a root cellar. My entire family, uncle's, aunt's cousins, all helped because we all lived in the same neighborhood (about 40 acres of family property in the mountains) That is just how it was, use the farm to make food for family (not to mention firewood, etc.) Before I was born they had cattle up on the mountain and grew tobacco to sale but even LONG after that food for the family, extended and all was still grown just because it was sensible.

Now it's making a big return to the limelight like it's some big new thing. For urbanites, yes sure it is. But if you didn't grow up in the middle of the city just ask your parents or grandparents, about growing your own groceries and why they did.

I'm not bashing anyone as I am not prepared. I have guns but those have been with me since the farm. I enjoy shows like doomsday preppers and best defense (they did a series on this kind of stuff) because sometimes they have useful stuff for the newly urbanited such as myself. I still dream of property but until then.....

As far as the end of the world sure all that stuff is plausible but unlikely. The theory of it will end in december cause the mayan calender says so, might happen but I'll put it like I think of it.

Anybody think that when the Mayans made their calender a they figured that in a couple thousand years when it was getting close to running out they would make the time to update it for a few thousand more years??

I think it is a good show but as far as the city dwellers are conserved, they may be in trouble. I live out in a small town on a few acres. I think it would be a real tough spot to be stuck in a large city with no power or water after a few days. Just my thoughts.
