so i've been thinking about fender flares for my truck, but bushwhacker and the like are too damn expensive for my taste. So it occured to me that if I was creative enough I could fabricate some myself. I was kinda thinkin swing by Home Depot and checkin out garden trim or something. Anyone done this or have any ideas? Let me know and post up pics if you got 'em!

it could work you could get some gutters and trim em up little banging and cutting some flat black paint could be lookin really good :P

I have used the black "lawn edging" before. It doesn't look too bad, flexes very nicley, unless you pinch it really hard, then it kind of creases but still hangs in there, unlike the "Bushcrackered" flares that like to split and shatter if you whack them. So, for about $6 a 20-25 foot roll, this is one of my favorite cheap mods. Oh, and being able to drive out of state with the tires covered by the flares is nice, too.

I don't know how much money you would be able to spend, but I've used rubber trim to fit fender extensions from JCWhitney. I think I paid about $70 but they run sales on them all the time. I just took them off of my 79 Power Wagon and they needed some new backing. I put them on in 1983 and they worked just fine. It's just another option.

I've used the heavy duty lawn edging on both my trucks, It's pretty tough stuff. Don't have any photo's but there are a couple of videos of my explorer in the video section.

thanks for the input guys. For those of you that have done it, did you trim your fenders as well?

I don't "trim" the fender as much as I cut and fold to make tabs for the plastic to attach to, mostly on the rear of the front fender, since my 2 RBVs' are box nose with the smaller wheel openings. I normally just trim the front edge and add some paint to stave off rust a little longer.

I bought the flair they use on school buses.
