disciplerocks's Ford Focus "build" thread

There's still bugs to work out.

I hear that. The 4.0 runs, it drives, it feels great, but it has this awful tick that I just can't figure out, and being as crazy as I am I can't get the stupid thing out of 3rd gear with this noise because I think some part of the rotating assembly will make a dramatic exit from the block.

As good as the 4.0 is, its still a bored 2.9

Yeah, but it the same torque curve as the 5.0 and fits better. Plus, no TFI, no distributor.

Plus, it's not a 2.9. I like the cologne engines, I really like this thing in my Ranger, for all that I have driven it, but I just wish it wasn't making this noise.

I like mine in the B2. I don't ever see a need to upgrade further.

So far I am not seeing it either. When I put the HIPO in the truck that was like a kick in the pants vs the 200,000 mile dead horse it replaced.

I haven't even driven the truck 2 miles since the swap, but I can already feel the difference. It just seems so much smoother than the 2.9.

There's nothing that compares to the feel, sound, smell, etc.. of a 5.0.

Plus you get the option of having it carbed or FI. And you can open up just about any parts magazine and get anything you want for one too.

I will agree that the 4.0 can never meet the sound of a small block. I am however a tad bit confused on your second point. Since when was carb ever an option?

Go EFI or go home.

It was an option till 86 lol.

I like a carbed 5.0. Has a nice slight off balance shake when idling plus the sound of the noise coming through the carb.

Only time you get that in a FI is when one of your injectors goes out on you.

Takes a real person to want to fine tune and make a carbed engine run just right, but only takes an idiot at AutoZone to plug in a scanner to an FI too tell you that you need to buy an over priced plastic part to get it to run right again.

Naww, everybody has their preferences and I understand. My decisionon was based on what I could afford to do but also I wanted to learn how things were done back in the days before everything was controlled by electronics.

Would I like to go FI in my truck, you bet but only if a carb setup gives me to much trouble on the trials, offroading, etc... and if I can get the money. But that's when I can afford to build a 302 from scratch, aiming for 300-325hp n/a.

Sorry for the thread jack, back to the 5.0 focus.

buddy of mine had abeast of a 289 Hi-Po out of an old Mustang in his Jeep...carb would let him down on the trail...he tried Holley's, Quadra-Jets, and even a "Truck Avenger" with no luck....

he rocks a FI 5.0 in it now with no issues on the trail...

FI is only way on trails, rocks, hills, etc...anything that deviates from level much...

and I agree, the 4.0 is more than enough for me on the trails...

If I could find out if the efi set-up off a non HO crown vic would work on my HO 5.0 (with the help off larger injectors and larger TB) then I would do that, trying to go cheap and simple on that.

Or if I could get my hands on a 4 barrel TBI setup for cheap or integrate one into my engine that came on another vehicle type from the factory then I would try that.

I think I should just wait till I can afford to build a 5.0.

The efi setup will work, its the wiring harness and ECU that won't. You can get a 95 f series harness and ECU (which is HO) and run that, or a mustang harness/ECU, or ex 5.0 with a couple more parts...

That sounds like the winning setup. But I do want the correct type of intake setup and my pick a part usually has 5.0 explorers in it. I just don't want to mess with the explorer wiring, ecu, etc...

So 95 is the only year f150 that will have the wiring harness and ecu?
